Putting your chain hook on rub rail may not be illegal but it makes you look like a lazy ### who doesn't care if he looks like he knows what he's doing
Law that straps are to be inside the rub rail

Not to mention your rubrail isn't made to be pulled on by a chain
MJ1657 and DrtyDiesel Thank this. -
Although it is acceptable to put the chain around a pipe spool or stake pocket and back onto itself as a form of securement (assuming your trailer is rated as such); both of which are attached to the rub rail. What I really don't like is when guys run the chain down inside or outside the pocket then back up and hook onto the edge of the pocket. This is why you see so many torn pockets.

I did not say they were hooked on the rub rail but hooked on the outside of the stake pocket. I do not have a rub rail.

Umm... I am agreeing with you. That's what I said. I do the same thing.

Those new Fontaines with the RASR are rated and pretty sweet for chaining to. Although strap placement can be a pain sometimes. The one I have has the older style rub rail, however they changed the thickness of the bottom, underneath area. Now you can't hook a flat hook to it so I'm forced to hook it to the rub rail. Our older Fontaines never had this problem. We called Fontaine and the acted like this was the first time they heard of this. This trailer we bought in March of 2012 from TMI. It was the last of the older style. We bought another one in Decemeber 2012 and it had the RASR.
