A couple older drivers told(showed) me that they run "leafless" logs. They take three or four log books the company gives us and tears out the pages, punch holes in them and put them in a binder.
I remember orientation a few months ago in orientation that they said they don't recommend doing this. That DOT frowns on it and looks at it as someone who is not keeping honest logs.
I mentioned that to one of the drivers and he said it's sure funny cause he just got a perfect DOT inspection.
Plus, in truck stop the other day I seen where they had little binders that would be perfect for a guy if they chose to keep their logs 'leafless'.
I'm just curious how many guys do this and from your experience how does DOT look upon it?

I ran loose leaf and have been checked by DOT. Not one of them ever said anything about it. It is legal.

"Loose leaf". Duh....I knew "leafless" was not the proper term. I just had a brain fart and couldn't think of the right term. lol

I bought a plastic clipboard at walmart. One that opens up. I would just tear off a logsheet and keep it inside along with my pen and ruler and 8 days prior. My long form DOT and card was inside. I also had the recap from the cover under the clip. Always neat and easy to get to.

i run loose.
Never had an issue with DOT. Heck I have had several that noticed that I ran loose and just handed me the book back. Said that since it was loose I could do just about anything with it.
I run loose so that when/ if I make a mistake I am not ripping a page out of the book. The DOT looks for ripped out pages and thinks that if you do this you are back logging.

I run company supplied logbooks, but I pull the staples out of them to make a looseleaf without the holes. I don't do this so I can cheat, but instead because I have only had to run logbooks for the past month, or so, and I still make a ton of mistakes, so I have to correct them often.
For the day I am logging, I use paperclips to hold the two pages and the carbon together. Not a perfect system, but it works.
Handed my paperclipped pages to a DOT official doing a logbook check the other day, and he had no problems with it. He even made the joke that, "he'd just have to wait for the next guy to find a violation."
I think doing it this way keeps things neater and you're not left with a book where you have to try and show why you felt the need to void out a day's log and redo it.Raiderfanatic Thanks this. -
may look suspicious especially if they are like mine and say "bound edge" on the top, but as others have said it's legal, and luckily you can't be fined for looking guilty

I don't even use carbon. 1 page is all I needed. I scanned it and kept the original.

I run leafless logs as well. It isn't illegal & it is actually easier to keep track of everything. DOT doesn't frown upon it at all. What DOT frowns upon are the inkless logs.... I've got a few tickets for carrying them.
