I did it. Do everything on my own these days. Screw the companies. No adventure being tied down like that. " oh you got to fuel here, and go this way and wear pants while driving or we will know "
#### all that.
Do the permit practice tests on TTR, go find a farming out fit, haul compost, corn/hay. Whatever, just get comfortable shifting, being observant and being a good driver. Go get your A, and jump on with a small mom and pop outfit. And roll on from there.
Where there's a will, there's sure as #### a way.FinkPloyd, KenworthGuyNH, 2Girls_1Truck and 2 others Thank this. -
Do some research and get trained by a reputable and accredited school/company. Your avatar leads me to think you are fairly young compared to those of us wearing shawls and gumming gruel when we park. Would you self teach if it was an airplane? That'd be safer. It's a marathon that can only be shortened if you train well before you run it.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Read this^^^^^^^^^
It's how I did it.
Youre way ahead of the game with the experience you have. Get away from the keyboard and get knocking on some doors.
Good luckStraight Stacks Thanks this. -
Sure, you can do it that way, if you have connections with people that have trucks and will give you a break.
Kalmbach Feeds in Sandusky might help you; check the website. They prefer farm experience, but may give you a break since they need drivers.
If you live near Willard, Dutch Maid may still have a training program.
MCT school in Wauseon, OH might have something and place you with CTL Transportation. CTL might pay for the school then hire you. Hazmat/tankers is a good career.no love for a trucker Thanks this. -
You don't need connections with people that have trucks.
That's mega company recruiter talk. -
How will he pass a road test at the DMV if he doesn't get some practice first? Does Ohio DMV furnish the truck when he tests out for the hard copy CDL?
I'm not a recruiter and never have been; just asking legitimate questions.
Tell us how you did it MJ1657. Give details so doglover will know.
I went to a short school because I didn't have the money to fiddle around trying to get a CDL and job by knocking on doors. Some have the cash stashed away to live on while doing it that way, but some of us don't.SOG and no love for a trucker Thank this. -
I got my permit. I rented a truck and took the test.
As far as money and fiddling around it cost me $425.00. The time you spend going to school you could easily earn that much flipping burgers if need be. And....still have time to knock on doors and not start at the bottom.
It's really not that hard just takes a little determination.HalpinUout Thanks this. -
I did the permit on my own studied the book then, I went to a school that excepted my permit it made my process a little bite easier and comfortable. That way while everyone was taking there permit test in school, I was capable of getting more drive time in. I didn't have a sponsor so I had to go to a school. I do know of people that applied for assistance with there CDL training at Work Force or Good Will and even the Unemployment Office they provide all expenses paid for the entire course and all endorsements. You would have to meet there requirements. I hope this helps

It all depends on where you live.
