No reason you couldn't as far as I know. As for insurance, you can carry your own bobtail policy, and stuff like workers comp., supplemental business insurance, etc. but you will be under the policy of the Motor Carrier you're leased on with when it comes to Cargo and Liability insurance.

Just be sure to check the requirements for having a proper paper-trail established, such as adequate lease contracts, for instance. It's necessary, and not too difficult. You can most likely find some example lease contracts from some of the big carriers. Call a few of them and ask to see a copy of their lease contract- implying you're possibly interested in hiring on with them. From those you'll be able to put together something suitable, probably. The paranoid side of me says to just pay your attorney to either draft one for you, or to review one that you make yourself, before putting it into force.

Good luck on the new venture.

    MHC Thanks this.

you CANT run under your freind mc and be covered under your own insurance so your freind have to add you to his policy, get you an ifta sticker, pay the ucr fee, drug test and god knows what else so you can run for two or three weeks!!!your freind must be a really really nice guy or a complete idiot.

Please clarify your answer. He can indeed lease on to another motor carrier, so perhaps you mean "no" he cannot use his own cargo and liability insurance?

If he is leased to another company and his pending MC Go active he will be in volation. You can't be under two MC at one time.

Really the insurance and compliance stuff will take longer and cost more than the 10 days or so for your own authority to become active. You are far better off waiting than risking an impound or compliance problem.

A month from now you'll wonder why you were worried about that two week wait.
