I was looking at some of the recent threads about expanding and hiring drivers and the thought just came through my mind well if you have your MC how about having people leased on under you?

Mind you this is something I'm not at all considering but reading through the other threads it just kind of got me thinking is that a viable alternative to buying trucks and trying to hire drivers? Assuming the government doesn't completely outlaw trucks being leased on across the entire United States...

I do realize just like a truck that you would own that someone under you can mess up your safety score and all of that but is it worth it? Depending on the deal you have with them I suppose you would have more office work but just curious.

And also if anyone could actually explain what the steps are to leasing on someone meaning is it a huge expense to add someone under your Authority? Are there any other legal steps besides the contract and adding them on your insurance?

You have to have a drivers jacket and do the same as if you were hiring a driver.

Not that hard really. Same as adding a truck of your own only you have a lease contract that allows them to get a plate and they cover collision insurance and bobtail along with occupational accident coverage.

All deals are different but you still need to do the drug testing, get another trailer, add to your liability insurance, make sure they’re safe and have e log, decide if you pay the tolls, IFTA, etc. Dispatch and handle billing. Cover the time until the money comes in since they want paid weekly.

Basically like hiring a driver and buying another truck only this time the truck comes with a driver and you have to share most of the money. They’ll probably use your fuel card as well and you deduct it out of the settlement.

Owner ops can be just as finicky as drivers though so it’s not always some slam dunk kinda deal. Although like drivers, there are great partnerships out there to be had.
