... Even so, for probably the first 10 years of my driving career, I was still a journalist moonlighting as a driver. I do love writing, and still miss doing it professionally. But this pays the bills much better.

Ain't no pensions in journalism. Lol

I'm not smart enough for most office jobs I believe. I was a general laborer but that just does not pay well for the hours worked being insane, or low no set hours most of the time. Finding trucking was a good thing but any job can get mundane. I think about leaving trucking often for cooking, or truck repair often.

I'm actually the exact opposite of most. I'm a 6g welder so I can actually make more money with a better pension than driving a truck but like @Chinatown said ....gotta do what you love. I'm just wired for local delivery work I think. I went off the road to go weld and became a clock watcher and hated getting up in the morning but now back out on the road I actually get to work early every day to clean my windows and love it.

It’s something you just need to try. Everyone reacts to being on the road differently

My cousin graduated with a degree in journalism and she couldn’t find a job in her field that paid the bills. Now she does sales at a roofing company making 40-45k a year. I think when she was in journalism she was only offered 18-25k a year which is barely minimum wage nowadays lol.

In today's world, there are only two real kinds of OTR truckers. Truckers that know the job and just have the proper personas to do it. Then there are the truckers that if not for trucking would be flipping burgers. Sad but true fact! I was headed out of being an active driver in the late part of 2012, actually was headed into a safety job with a medium-size fleet. Those plans fell through as I begin to develop problems with epilepsy. Then other medical issues caused me to have to give up my CDL and finally all my driving even a POV. I don't advise ANY driver that is currently OTR and generally happy to make this jump. You WILL most likely come to regret doing it. I know life tosses you a (redacted) sandwich from time to time. Still think long and hard before jumping out. It getting harder and harder to get back the longer you stay out. Take note I said OTR! Local driving is more of a different dynamic.

There is nothing wrong with improving yourself. Just remember though. If the smell of diesel exhaust causes your heart rate to increase. If you sit all day daydreaming about being back on the road, chances are you will come to regret jumping out.

I would also add that some drivers will jump out of OTR and run local or regional for 6 months to a year just to take a break. I recommend doing this before totally jumping out. I can't stress how difficult on average it is today to go through the hiring process with much more than 6 months of none driving.

Dang back in 2003? The job market for journalism is 10x worse now. You'll be lucky if you could land a part time position.
