I'm thinking about leaving my current company, but only had a few weeks of manual shifting experience in CDL school a year ago. Bad memories of stalling, grinding gears, not finding a gear, and instructors yelling, "get off the clutch!"
Besides those were only ten and nine speed trucks, which won't help me if a company wants me to drive a 13 speed.

So, if I shop around for other companies should I restrict myself to only automatic companies or is it reasonable to expect to find a company that would train me on their manual trucks even though I'm beyond rusty?

A 13 speed and or an 18 speed are 9 speeds, you just split the gears. 10 speeds suck.

13 speeds aren't that common, well not as common as 9 and 10 speeds so I wouldn't expect a company running 13s to find perfect shifting right out the gate.

I drive for an auto only company, haven't shifted a truck in over 15 years. If I was thinking of leaving my company I would be looking for a training outfit that I could pay to brush up on my shifting. One of those fly by night 1 truck places. Offer them a hundred bucks to bobtail around town for half an hour or something like that.

    Agreed.

OP stunk then after only a few weeks he'll stink now.

This is why Maine has a 'Manual Restriction' put on licenses if you test out in an Auto.

IMO, double pumping and banging thru gears is the funnest part of the drive - aside from being able to back-up, navigating and reading / projecting traffic - it's one of the Top 3 skills a CDL holder should have.

That said, I just got put in a brand new (60 miles on the odo) Auto, on Tuesday. :|

Look for a company that runs a setup like this. No Elogs either!

A 13 speed is like an 8 speed only with a splitter for the high gears, that's all, but with more autos now shifting gears is kinda going away which I like to shift but to each his own

I believe you should be required to take a driver's test with a manual tranny. Blows my mind when I hear of people who can't shift. Can't wrap my head around it.

I tested in a manual. DMV passed me, but I can't imagine a company hiring me with my "skills."

Most would "retrain" you... their way. Even if it's just a road test; if you're not up to par, they will let ya know, and possibly work with you.

I can foresee a similar post in the future regarding "self-driving" trucks.
