I didn't have to go out with a trainer because I had accumulated a solid 30 days of OTR in a regional position plus some accumulated part time driving. Looking back on it now (a month later) I wish I would have gone with a trainer for a week or 10 days. While everyone from a variety of companies and every single Melton driver has helped me, I relearned a lot of things that I could have gotten a little less painfully with a trainer. I have used my mentor numerous times with questions about securement or things that Melton does that other drivers tell you will get you a ticket in x,y,z states. My DM has been a great resource, too. Super easy going and a good sense of humor. All of those calls are getting less frequent. At the same time, I don't regret not being cooped up in a moving closet with someone I had never met before driving their truck. Hopes all of that helps.
Yeah same here i had my cdl since 05. Was a pepsi delivery guy they got me my cdl plus paid me drove for stevens and werner than was over seas for a bit and drove over there from 09-10 and been working on planes since but those jobs are becoming more and more picky so i let the va pay for my refresher at sage in rome ny and looking to get back on the road.
With experience, even though its old, you may get lucky and not go with a trainer, but if you do I dont see it being more than two weeks.
