Funny you say that because I just got off the phone with Melton. Seems like a decent company. 0.39 cents to start then 0.41 cents after 3 months. The only downside is that they don't have a terminal here in California. They let you take your truck home, but I have nowhere to park it. I'd have to work out a place close by to park with them.

Yeah, I've decided that 8 weeks is just too much. Especially in a KW T660--not much space. That's mainly why I decided to quit. System was very kind and understanding about all of this and I don't want to let this experience tarnish the entire company. They seem like they're on the up and up and very safety focused. One of the first things they told us is that if you can't do it legal or you can't do it safely then don't do it. Otherwise we don't want you. Go someplace else.

I'm hoping to find something local (easier said than done). Or go with Schneider or Melton.

Does anyone have any tips for landing a local job as a new driver?

Two months? Really? Awful long, IMHO. If you go into the training, keep yourself open to it, after all you might get a decent driver/trainer. If you run into trouble, call HR, get another job, but at no point eat any of that smelly stuff. You're going to be a valuable resource and you can do what you see is necessary. Tough it out if you can, if not, choose another path. See? Easy! Best.

No worries CWR. There was a guy quitting after a couple weeks or less on the road every time i hit the Spokane Terminal. Hell one time their was no tarps left at the yard, but a guy walked in quitting and i got to take his tarps lol.

I'd say for every 10 people they bring to orientation they're happy if 1 makes it through the 1st full year.

If you live in the Spokane area check out CL for the ads running the chip trucks. Those guys are a little crazy, but they get home every day.

It's amazing how people go to school and get their CDL, go through orientation, then go through training and then quit when they are shocked to find out they actually have to work. Sure there are "horror stories" out there, but reading between the lines:

"They were running me to death" - aka they actually expected you to put in at least 500 miles of driving a day.

"I couldn't take a bathroom break" - aka you couldn't figure out how to take any less than 25 minutes to go relieve yourself, go shopping, try on hats, and chat up the girl at the counter on a typical piss break.

"I couldn't take a shower" - aka you never figured out how to take a shower on a 30 minute break and sometimes in order to make a delivery on time you had to run miles to take a 10 hour break that had no truck stops within 100 miles. You never learned to use baby wipes and stay clean without modern facilities.

"I was tired all the time" - aka your play time on the game console during your 10 hour break always seemed to be interrupted by the need to start a pre trip inspection.

I know, it's shocking. When you are out on the road "they" actually expect you to "GASP!" do the job you "worked" so hard to get.

None of that has anything to do with what happened to me. So...

None of that had you in mind, but simply using this thread to let other new drivers know that when they start training they need to expect to hustle on their breaks, SLEEP during their 10 hour break, and drive like this isn't a vacation.
