I don't think I've ever toggled my Jakes to the "off" position. Signs/local ordinances be ######.

Just have your exhaust muffled ffs. If your exhaust is muffled properly, your jakes won't be any louder than the normal roar of your engine.

A lot of cities I pass through have signs posted saying what the law is really there for : "No excessive noise".

The same people that use their unmuffled engine brakes are the same oh so cool people that think straight pipes are the only way to go on a motorcycle. It makes you look poor in my opinion. Jeez can not even afford a muffler so you can hear that siren pulling you over for being a douche. Or those stupid rockets with their scream.

Being a jerk off annoying people is not a right anymore than me fixing your obviously broken equipment is.

I do agree noise ordinances are semi subjective but with the new batch of idjits with their whopping 1.6 litre with the can exhaust driving through our neighborhood has come to an end since we passed the ordinance about excessive noise. We do warn 1 time but then the fines get rough.

Want to make a fool of yourself go buy some property, build a track and you and your buddies can drive in circles to the wee hours of the morning with your jakes, your crappy exhaust........

Oh and Jakes are not required to drive across flat roads as many have posted. Your showing your inability to operate a heavy vehicle when you leave them on IMO. See for every unit of energy you use to make those oh so cool sounds you have to use again to regain lost momentum. But hey that's Ol' School Baby:biggrin_25517:

Post all you want about jakes not being required on flat ground. Fact: If hadn't had mine on a couple weeks ago, 4 people in a powder blue Buick that turned right in front of me would be dead. I missed them by literally a couple of feet. So you turn yours off. Mine stays on.

Drivers should have to learn how to drive without engine brakes and then they'll know how to drive with them.

Anyone can drive anywhere safely in this country without them. The whole purpose and design was to aid brakes from overheating and fade on mountain grades, period.

Those that think they are neccesary everywhere need to adjust their driving habits. I know some will say they are saving their brake shoes. Yes you are. But at the expense of putting extra wear on your driveline and engine parts.

No matter what one thinks, the truck is not going to stop any quicker than the tire traction allows. Shoes and ABS work adequately enough for maximum braking in an emergency situation. If you didn't have ABS, you can even lock your tires up. Though you are breaking traction, increases stopping distance. It shows the point of the power of the brake shoe. Thinking the engine and driveshaft is making the tires grab more is nonsense. Whatever device can stop the tires rotating, stops it. If you are using your jakes on flat ground and I'm not, I can stop just as quick as you.

These laws were made from dumb baby dewey drivers that get their rocks off from the noise. "I'm cool, look at me". Unfortunately, the rest of us have to suffer. In many cases, jakes just make our job easier.

You're forgetting about reaction time. Ever heard that you travel the length of a football field in a panic stop before your foot even gets to the brake pedal? My jake is already on slowing the truck before someone without it can start slowing down. So yeah you do stop faster with the jake on. Maybe it's only by a fraction of a second, but considering what's at stake, I'll take it.

From the time your brain recognizes and your foot makes it to the pedal is almost two seconds.

They can set jakes up how they want in the shop just like the other options. My last truck actually had a 3 second delay on the engine brake. It was weird getting use to, but I liked it because it didn't interupt your shifting any. But I see what you are saying.

It doesn't bother me how one uses it other than the ones jaking in parking lots and low speeds. Totally unnecessary.

You can't tell me an engine brake is a substitute for following distance and paying attention to what's in front of you. I suppose a parachute or a batmobile grappling hook would have helped you out as well.

Whhat puzlles me is I've now seen several posts from experienced driver claiming to never shut them off. WTF do you do in the winter?

One of the few times I tried to watch that crap about canadian truckers the guy said" The exhaust brake system is the primary system for stopping on ice and snow".

Yeah I know it is one of those insipid "reality" shows, just proved to me the idjits in charge of production were as clueless as the idjits in the truck.
