From Werner's latest quarterly report . "Highlight of Business Operations:
Operating revenues increased 10.0% for the three months ended September 30, 2011, compared to the same period of the prior year. Trucking revenues, excluding fuel surcharges, increased 0.7% due primarily to a 2.9% increase in revenue per total mile, offset by a 2.0% decrease in the average monthly miles per tractor and a 0.1% decrease in average tractors in service." http://www.gurufocus.com/news/151561/werner-enterprises-inc-reports-operating-results-10q
Less tractors in service ? Where are all those new drivers going through orientation going ?
Number of tractors in past years is no longer available at safersys.org like it was before CSA 2010
Are some fleets increasing in size ? Yes , because bottom feeders offer cutthroat rates to manufacturers that had private fleets . Schneider and JB put well paid , safe drivers out of work with their cheap rates . WalMart also told vendors they could no longer ship their products . Schneider would pick them up .

They have to hire 10 drivers to find 1 "good driver" who is cut out for the lifestyle, then factor in all those decent drivers who quit out of sheer frustration due to poor miles and treatment ... orientations will always be full so long as there are "salesmen" out there convincing hungry, out-of-work people that trucking is the answer to their unemployment issues.
