How much are you pulling for weight?
What are you seeing for mileage?
What are you running for rears and a rear ratio?
How do you like it?
My glider is coming in with in the next 4 weeks and I need to hurry up and decide if I want the C-16 or C-15...
Spring to fall we will be running from NH, ME, MA, and VT to the VA,SC and FL area around 80,000lbs but in the winter we pull dump trailers with road salting from the coast of NH and Maine to northern Maine and the White Mountains in NH and VT maxed out with permits.
Lets hear it from the guys with the C-16s. What are you getting?

If you're going to build a glider you only have a few serial number choices in a 3406E/C-15/C-16 CAT engine. These engines must communicate with the other computers in the new truck. These serial numbers listed have those capabilities.
My preferences would be a 7CZ C-16 first......why torque and less prone to oil leaks
3406E 15.8L 1MM 2nd........why it's the same cubic inch displacement of the 7CZ with the same electronics on it.
C-15 6NZ or MBN converted to a 6NZ 3rd.......less prone to oil leaks
3406E 14.6L 2WS would be last place
the 3406E engines use a different gasket system to seal everything when compared to the C-15/C-16, otherwisse they are the same engines Cat sdp and CrayzyCatPower Thank this. -
We have a c16 in a long hood running east of missipi river pulling a drop deck and he gets real close the same fuel mileage as our c15s which is a quarterly average of bout 5.8 to 6.2 but you will definately want to bump it up with a pdi stage1 if I'm right he gained around a half when he did that on the 16. Our 15s are all stage1 as well and trust me they are no match for the big motor. As far as reliability it has basically no issues was rebuilt at 1.2mil and only cause the green coolant ate thru the back of one of the cylinder sleeves. He put down 740hp and 2500ft lbs on the dyno. But if you are setting it up for yourself as an o/o and the repair bill is yours, you keep that in the back of your mind and not abuse the extra power you will love it

The reason I would pick the C-16 is the power. The stock C-15 will average better fuel mileage than a stock C-16 in the same application. If you are buying a reman engine from CAT with a 4 year warranty, you will be limited to the modifications you can do for fuel mileage and still retain the warranty

good luck paying for a new glider hauling salt all winter bud....
We got both c-15 and c-16s, geared the same doing the same job the 550 will do a liitle better on fuel, maybe 3-4 tenths less than the 600 uses.
We haul 100,000+ depending on whose looking.
When they were stock, the power difference would only really show in longer pulls....
The 550 trucks are about 500 pounds lighter.
One other thing, and you may know this already. The 600 requires a bigger clutch and the bigger 2150 torque trans behind it. More $$$. I personally would use the bigger trans even behind a 550, and you better use biggest clutch spicer makes with either motor, or just get a Lipe.CrayzyCatPower Thanks this. -

My first post. My 7cz gets 5.3 pulling reefer and a lot of empty miles for that. Pulling flat will get 5.6 not as many empty miles. 2001 379 exhd .

Hey guys , i have a 2001 pete with a 7cz that i ordered brand new. I have 3.90 and tall 24.5. Im registered in mass. For 130,000 lbs. i pull a lowbed most of the time. Im averaging 5.4 - 5.6. One trip up to bangor with a cat end dump i got 5.9.. That was loaded going up and empty coming back average. If you try to push your road speed up towards 70+ my fuel milage drops to 4.5 - 4.7. If you push it, it will drink the fuel! But talk about power, with a 330 cat excavator on the lowbed, heading west on rt. 290 into worcester, ma. Climbing the long hill going by lincoln plaza just before getting into downtown worcester, i can crest the top going 54 mph with only clicking into 17 th gear. Thats not bad for grossing 120,000 lbs. All this in stock configuration. Just got done putting a bully dog manifold on with the bully dog manifold gaskets. Also put on a BW turbo, turbine #171698, cartridge #175964, compressor #175963. Talk about quick spool and 37 pounds of boost. WOW does this 7cz run good now. I absolutely love it! Will let you guys know what the new fuel milage numbers come in at.

I did look at the pdi products. I did my own homework. I figured for now, i already have a 7cz ecm so i figured i would leave that alone for now. I read a lot on this site, and one of the members laid out the part numbers for the bw turbo that he put on his truck. He complained about a very slow spool speed, so he said he got in touch with mr. Haney, and he let him try an exhaust housing that should work real good. Well this guy couldnt be more happy with the quick spool and the overall boost that he was now getting. So i wrote these part numbers down and ordered the bw turbo for 1599.00. Lets face it, bully dog or pdi do not manufacture their own turbos. One guy wrote that the bully dog turbo was the same turbo as these bw part numbers. I was going to order the extruded manifold from pdi, until i bumped into a guy named doug burdick up in new hampshire. An absolute cat guru!! I have heard a lot about doug, so i stopped at his shop to meet up with him. After talking with him i ended up with a bully dog exhaust manifold & gaskets. It is the polished and coated one. Put it on my truck last weekend. Just got back from storrs, ct. Had to haul my 54,000 lb excavator back home. All i can say is WOW!! Pulling a heavy load tonight @ 69 degrees out i was able to get 39 pounds of boost. The power is probably more than i should have. I dont want to break anything. Even cruising at 1250 rpm, all you have to do is just touch the fuel a little bit and the boost spools right up to 30 - 31. As the rpm's climb the boost continuously climbs to 39 @ 1500. With all this being said, the exh. Temp has never gone over 800. So im into the manifold and gaskets for 1550.00 and the turbo for 1599.00. Maybe pdi would be a better way to go, but it certainly would of cost me a lot more money for these two components from them. Right now im completely happy, and still getting used to the new power. Ill have some fuel milage numbers soon to post
morehp and CrayzyCatPower Thank this.
