So, I'm stepping down the bigroad with an oversize. The drivers going the other call out on the CB about a big backup in Lafayette, IN, and how to get around it. 6 mile backup. Soon, I see the signs warning of the road construction and long delays. Great...one of those days...

I see the backup. I start gearing down. And I stop. Suddenly, the CB is alive. Everyone is asking, "what's the holdup? What's going on? WHAT LANE WE NEED TO BE IN? And everyone crams into 1 lane. Of course, the fours make a mad dash for the other lane. Then, tempers start to flare, and some driver does a rolling roadblock.

I've often wondered, "Who taught drivers to do this? You're not helping the situation, you are bottlenecking the bottleneck. You are part of the problem."

    Is there a better way?

Instead of all the drivers cramming into 1 lane ASAP, ride all the lanes, only increase your following distance from the vehicle in front of you to 1.5 trucklengths

But what about the 4wheelers...how do you get them to cooperate?

You don't need the fours cooperation. Increase your following distance, keep her in the low side of the transmission and just idle along. No one will have to stop to be let in. It should flow a lot better than the current plan ever did.

I see your point but it still becomes a.mess when all lanes are used, its all about who gets there first and I don't wanna wait.

The "zipper" method is the rule in mn now. When posted you are requierd to run out all lanes till merge point, then every other like a deck of cards..... yea cuz everyone is nice here... me idel in 3 or 4th.. giant 6 plus car gap infront, all but never touch the brake, and never need the clutch.

    tsavory Thanks this.

That is going to be a tough area for awhile...easy to get around if you are prepared....as in keep the CB on.

Yeah the theroy is when 2 lanes merging into one this method mimics the stager that occours when freeway on ramp meeters are being used

I agree. Don't get me started on the "part-time traffic control cops" who come out of the woodwork and see the need to act like the boss of the situation who's going to make everything all better :biggrin_25523:

It's a bad situation, and pushing the jam further back quicker, ain't helping anything.
