DED6533C-9822-4965-A6DE-14163E3ECD08.jpeg Today our tool truck driver got a level 3 inspection. Truck is a brand new gmc 3500 and was towing a garden trailer with hand tools. None of our tool trucks ever had dot numbers on them nore did the drivers have med cards. Yes the owner let the temporary registration run out but really a PM for a garden trailer. I didn’t even think you needed a med card to drive that because i was under the impression the tool trucks were not for hire. The old tool truck was pulled over in the past for a light out and nothing was ever said about dot#s or med cards. Shine some light on this please.

Generally speaking a CMV for the purposes of medical cards is a vehicle used commercially that has a weight rating of 10,001 or more. I do not know how your vehicle falls as for as being a CMV or not. However people sometime forget that 26,001 thing is primarily for CDLs

That truck fully loaded with the trailer wouldn’t even be close to 10,000 pounds thanks for that link.

I don't know fully what the driver had listed as violations. The rated weight should be in a door plate. Without knowing anything more all I can do is advise to seek out legal help if you feel this officer was wrong.

Rated weight? Thought it was a Dodge 3500 pickup?

That's why I'm not trying to give specific advice here. This might be some kind of intrastate thing. Some states define commercial vehicles differently.

Most 3500 coming out of our plants (we do all the 3500 crew cabs) are GVWR of 10,000 lbs. So unless the trailer had a GVWR of less than 1 pound you would have triggered the 10,001 lb GCVWR requirement to be a CMV.
Dot numbers, med card, drug testing etc are all triggered.
