I recently just got my class A CDL. I have the air brake endorsement but I am thinking of getting haz mat, tank, and doubles and triples. Now my question is, would I have to also another driving test for each one when I pass the written? I was under the impression that all you needed to do to add the endorsements to your current CDL was to pass the written test for each category. I did call the DMV and tried to ask but got put on hold and I gave up after 20 mins.
Thanks, Kestrel1

You might want to hold off on the hazmat . Some employers will reimburse you for the background check .kestrel1 Thanks this. -
Nope just the written test and as RickG said background check for haz mat.

I have passed my doubles and trips and seeing as I haven't been working I decided to go down to the DMV and add the tanker and haz mat. Now I know there is a background check with the haz mat but how does that work? I thought it would just happen when I pass the test, but it has been about 4 weeks since I did the test and still no sign of my license. It took my last one about a week. Is there something else I needed to do?

no if you doing before the renew date ,look the small date in the bottom of the license

Under FMCSR 380.101 - 380.113, not only do you need to take the written test at the DMV for Longer Combination Vehicle's (LCV's), but you need to be certified through a driver training program which includes classroom training and actual operation of LCV's. There was a time that you could be grandfathered in, but I think that that time frame has passed.

I took the haz-mat test & got my endorsement when I grandfathered into the CDL program. Back then it was just a written test without any other requirement just like all the other endorsements. I never had one time that I needed it so I let it go. I guess it might give you more options when looking for a job in the long run but it's not required by all companies. -
just took my cdl A permit today NYS DMV u can take all the endorsement tests u want.. cheaper to do them all at once.. i did combination, doubles, triples, taker, farm everything but hazmat/hazmat tanker,, its 138.00 and u pay then go to the state police for ur finerprints..its easier to pass the federal background check then it is the NY state background check..when ur check comes back clear they add them to ur licence.. and in NY u cant be granfathered in with the hazmat. when u renew it u must do the 138.00 and background check...
