A friend of mine drives box trucks for a company out of Indiana. The truck he is driving doesn't have a back license plates. He told his job about it repeatedly about the plates. My question is if he gets stopped at a weigh station for an inspection or gets stopped by a cop he will get put out of service until his company a new plate for the truck or he will get a ticket?

Good question. If the taillights are mounted into the body or there's no mount for the plate due to a lift being there, I as the officer would let it fly. Contact DOT or State Police for the best answer.

If the truck has current registration, but is missing a license plate, than he would probably just get issued a fix it ticket.
Texas_hwy_287 Thanks this. -

Is a rear plate required on commercial vehicles in Indiana? Many states it is not.

My Penske tractors, IN IRP plate on the front while the box trucks have one IN IRP on the rear...

I have indiana plated box trucks with them on both ends.
The only issue any one has had was when we would go to canada and return, the ice agent would tell either me or my drivers that they need to be on the front.Texas_hwy_287, Lonesome and wis bang Thank this. -
DMV is the best place to reach to, they would give a better answer.

Never a plate on the back of the bobtail ever. Usually the front.
If the trailer had a plate it will be on the back.
In Arkansas we only use one plate. That saves alot of trouble. -
Had one rookie LEO pull over one of our bobtail tractors due to no rear plate, was trying to write all sorts of stuff till his supervisor came along and stopped him...NJ gives out (2) IRP plates, I think NY too. and ours were Indiana...the local Penske shop actually installs them so that may be why the box trucks are on the rear...
