I am in the processing of getting my authority after leasing under someone else's. I have been told by my previous "boss" that I must return my license plates. Most of my expenses were paid thru
this other company and taken out of my check (insurance, licensing,
fuel, etc.). Since I just paid for my tabs in June, what is my
recourse? Are they transferrable to my new authority? Please don't tell me I have to pay another $3500. Help.
I am in Washington State, if that makes a difference.

If the plates are in your name you should own them.

When I was with Mercer they took back the plates when I quit and they could transfer them to another truck so they gave me a credit for the remaining months not used.... not everybody does that.

Does WA pro-rate new plates according to the month they are issued? if so you may not have to pay the whole enchilada at one time.

Your best bet is to go ahead and get your own plate and deal with them later. If they cancel the plate and you get pulled in a scale it could cost you big time. More than likely you was paying for the plates but they are registered in the carriers name. did you have a contract wit the carrier if so check it it might spell it out for you. But you should be refunded for the unused time on the plate

Look at your registration...it should tell you who's name the truck is registered in.... call your base plate state and ask about it.
