This is what we tell our son all of the time. Trucking seems to be in my blood. I spent over 40 years working in office jobs and for the local telephone company. One day a friend asked me if I wanted to drive. Told them I could not even stay awake at times driving my own car let alone a truck. It came as a surprise to me but I found it to be pretty easy to stay awake and alert driving a truck. I just make sure I get enough rest.
I worked for a local company for 3 years and then worked for J.B. Hunt for just over 3 years. Had to take a year off to recover from a TIA (transient ischemic attack). This was a DOT requirement. I now work for an agency where I usually get about 30 hours a week and often more. It is nice because I can pick and choose when I work.
I have an observation. There are many drivers out there that are putting their CDL in jeopardy. Maybe they do not care but I often see drivers doing a full 70+ miles an hour in California. Also many of them are following so close that if something happens they will certainly not make their pickup or delivery. Almost daily I hear of a big rig that has been involved in a (wreck) on one of the San Francisco Bay Area freeways. I call it a wreck because it is easy to tell the driver was not driving defensively. Especially when I see 2 or 3 rigs that are stopped together with damage to each of them!
Life is fun, exciting and an adventure
