The weekend school sounds like a good idea. What is the name of that school? I live in Missouri. I don't know if there is a weekend school close to me or not. Does anyone know of one?

Just be aware that once you get your CDL if you're not driving just about 100% of the companies out there will require you to go through a refresher course after you've been out of school for awhile. I'm not sure how long the time frame is but what I've read the refresher to me is no big deal. But that's me.

I live close to Houston that's where the school is for appr. $2500.
I'm 45 and have no intention on getting back in construction work again if something ever happens to the mill where I work now.

Milby, do an internet search for your area. There are many private schools around. Also be sure to check into state/federal grants that may be offered to you. (When you find a school, they will know if there are any.) Looking at some of the schooling prices for some of these companies, I think it may be a bit cheaper to go through a private school.

Well folks I'm back. I only have five years to go until I retire from this job. I forgot about trucking for a couple years since I posted on here and then a couple weeks ago, I "got the bug" again. Just wondering how the trucking industry has changed in the last 5 or 6 years since I was reading these forums and made my original post? Has it gotten better or worse? I will be researching the industry on the forum again. Thanks and it's good to be back. I can't believe how the time has gone by so fast.

Pay is probably higher now on a per mile basis but the trucks are probably in the shop more.
