Hey guys my names David, I'm 20 years old (21 in February) and live in Bradenton, FL... an hour south of Tampa. My dads been driving since 94 and Ive been a truck nut since I can remember. I'm not a newbie to the information regarding the industry, I know its not fun and games. My dads been fortunate enough to almost always driven a nice truck, which him and I both take pride in. Polished aluminum, lights etc. Im not a future steering wheel holder to say the least. I currently work as a heavy equip operator driving the big Offroad dump trucks. Coming up on a year doing that. I signed up for PTEC in St. Pete in September. I'm signed up for the April course but have been offered to start earlier, in January. I feel like I'm so young and I shouldnt jump into school right away, even though its just a few months early. Thats one thing Im totally undecided on ATM. Also, would love some guidance on what companies to look for to get on with, whether it be a mega fleet, something close, or whatever may be out there. Id radther not run for werner, swift, jb etc. But I will if I have to. My dad has ran chemical tankers for 90% of his career so Ive always had interests there (CTL, superior, etc) but would love to hear what I would be best at starting out with. Best equipment, most decent pay to start out and all those FAQ's. Hometime isnt a huge issue, no girlfriend wife or kids. Would be still based out of Bradenton FL although I would move if neccesary. Thanks for any opinions, info or stories.

Try for a good chemical tanker job.

    SVTN
    Superior-Carriers
    CTL

Start your career with a good paying job instead of a "paying your dues" company.

You're young now, but 10 years will go by fast. I hesitated in getting on my career and now I'm pushing 30 and just starting (kind of). There's nothing wrong with getting into this asap if you know what you want out of your job. A CDL will only cost you 5k, and you'll make that back in 3 months if you just want to break even and quit your job. You're so young that doing even 1 year of OTR will go by faster than you think. Get your experience young, and you'll get an amazing job eventually. I say go for it if you know you'll be doing it eventually.

I'd go for it now too. You have the advantage of being young and a Dad that's in the biz so you should get straight scoop there and may lead to you not having to go with a mega carrier, though there are a lot of others out there that take students and are big enough to have the advantages of a big company but small enough to be more personal too. One challenge you may face, though, is where you live. It's getting harder and harder for a lot of trucking companies to get drivers home down in FL. Not saying that is always the case and there are a lot that do FL, just something to consider. If tankers is your interest then I'd go with that from the beginning and get every endorsement you can in school. Tankers are very specialized and it's better, in my opinion, at least easier anyway; to learn it right from the get go rather than try and unlearn some things and get the endorsements and training later on after you have been driving for a while. Some companies disagree and want some experience first, but I personally found it easier to go from specialized to general than the other way around. That way if you decide tankers isn't for you, you'll have no problem getting into another type of fleet and you'll always have that tanker experience in your resume, as a fall back if need be. Living in FL you might also look at refers. It seems like they are able to get to FL easier. Some fleets FL is no problem and don't be discouraged, just something to keep in mind when talking to recruiters. Whatever you decide, be safe and best of luck.
