Sounds like a PNW Maxi rig. Where is the lift positioned? Dead ahead of the drives or further forward?
Would be okay. 3.70s would make it a little better on starting heavier loads, but, an 18 with 3.55s would be workable.
The 18-speed has the lowest starting hole of the common transmissions. 14.21:1. Gives you a 50:1 total reduction in the low hole.
13s are next lowest at 12.31:1 and 10s are highest at about 10.40:1
The 18 would help.
Now you see why I like my 6x4. Compound low (deep-under) on 4.44s and I'm 78:1 in the low hole. Need 5.60s on an 18 to match me. Double over, 1600-rpm at 65mph when empty or light or coasting.

8-axles in Colo is good to about 175,000 on the right spreads. Even run as closed groups, 162,000. Big difference between "heavy haul" on the higher divisible and registered weights some states allow and heavy haul itself. -
I agree with that, weight is just weight. I think the real joke is running 3+ more axles and "must net 64k" and getting the same rate as a 5 axle.
Don't tell that to a Swift regional (Lewiston) or Gordon- they have "heavy haul" van divisions here.....they are some bad hombres. Had 3 of them come up to me recently at the Jerome J and tell me they were "workin' on buying a truck & lowboy and go out on their own".
Wow, did I get off topic there..........Last edited: Dec 7, 2015

I snorted my beer all over my iPhone at this one!
BTW, still laughing... -
So, would it be safe to say the 3.70 are good for steep grades like in Virginia and 3.55 are good for the flat lands??
Heavy Hammer. Lol... -
actually a 10c is 13.xx to 1 low hole its between a 18 and 13spd if I was spending the cash for ratio change 3.90 min 4.10 or 4.33 are more common one could add a aux trans or go with 2 speed rears since your thinking about chunking yours
-
For now, I'm sure I don't need a 2 speed transmission. I'm not hauling what you serious folks are hauling yet.
