If you drive a company vehicle that is under 10,001 pounds,(like a 1/2 ton pick-up) can you be on duty and drive for more than the 11 hours driving rule in a 14hour day and be off duty for less than the 10 hours rest rule before starting a new shift?

Only if you're not hauling cargo. If you haul cargo the weight doesn't matter. Not that it stops some hotshotters.

So if you are hauling cargo you must comply with HOS regulations?

    Hours of Service
Apparently only if your over 10,000, which includes combined weight. ie truck and trailer combined is over 10k.

Not having to log it doesn't make you exempt.

So we are in a 1/2 ton crew cab work-truck driveing to and from the work site. There are 2 hands and the driver, their personal gear like lunch box and coveralls. Maybe tires chains and some tools in the bed of the truck.. Then we must comply with HOS rules?

I'm suspecting not, but don't quote me on that. Though it's good to have some solid details for the HOS scholars to work with.

You sound like a blacktop paving tool truck to me. We taint logged nothing in our time doing that.

As the other poster stated, if you are hired to haul a half ton of... widgets from Little Rock to say... Louisville KY overnight and paid for it to make a living doing that, yes you are involved in interstate commerce and will be logging etc etc etc.

But if you are just going to a little job site like paving a driveway or building a pool or something down in the next county, no. Your time clock will be your hours. Not the log book.

Your truck, your private property which you OWN is NOT subject to rules.
