Think a ton of feathers vs a ton of bricks.

    oh...ok....

we usually had all light stuff, sometimes not even a full trailer(s), and only on a rare occasion did anyone of us had those liquid totes. and that would be going in both directions.

by the way, a ton of bricks, requires no hazmat endorsement.!

Under the lower classfications of the NMFC, theoretically you can carry 24 shipments consisting of one ton of bricks on a 48’ trailer, therefore carriers charge less for that freight.

A ton of feathers on the other hand will take up far more space and will therefore be classed far higher and be more expensive.

Anyhow on a different note, since someone asked about linehaul, I will offer this sage advice that has saved me many times.

If you are able to scale your pups, ALWAYS scale EVERY time. NEVER trust what some idiot printed on a manifest.

If the dolly and the rear trailer axle both individually scale heavier than the front trailer axle, your trailers are backwards, regardless of what’s on your manifest. Shippers can and do lie frequently about what their crap weighs.

Yep. Our company now re weighs 90 percent of the shipments we handle. The differences are staggering.
