i can only think of one situation and that would be if you were only 2/3 days out and for some reason you were sitting longer then you had planned and dident want a restart when you had soo many hours avalible.

As I read the rule, 5 hours if you need to be able to drive anytime during the 14, it could be less(sooner) if you were going to be on duty less than 14 or not drive after 11th hour.

There is no minimum as long as you do not drive the truck after being on duty/driving after 8 hours without a 30 minute break.
If you take it to soon though, you may need another 30 minute break.

Example: I start working @ 8:00 am, I drive 1 hr, then break 3 hours (at customer). I have 10 hours on my 11 & 14, however after 8 hours of working/driving I must take a 30 minute break, which now means total brk time was 3.30 hours that period.

If I start working @ 0800, drive 6 hours, take a 3 hour break, then I can drive 5 more hours and no 30 minute break needed again.

Most drivers already get a 30 minute break every day! Most do! Timing might need adjusted a little l.o.l. I think it's crazy because it
forces you to drive a little longer even if you are ready for a break so you don't have to take another 30 minute break later.
I do think you should not be allowed to drive 11 straight hours but I preach you legally can until 7/1/2013!

If you are driving 3 hours and 1 min before the break lets you drive 11 hours. If its a combo of driving and on duty time 6 hours and 1 minute before the break clears the 14 as long as at least 3hr and 1 min is driving time.

That's what I'm getting at I start my day at 6am I get to my customer at 8am than it may take 5 hours to load me so before I pull out can I show a 30min off duty? Than be good the rest of my 11/14 day?

That would work. As long as you don't have to be on the dock log 15 min on duty to check in and spot the trailer, then log sleeper berth, then 15 Minutes on duty to check out and if all that equals 4 hours or more you are good to go.

My question is: if you begin your 34 hour restart on Sunday morning at 1:00 am and then the next Saturday you have the weekend off but do not go back out :Trailer:until Monday afternoon, can you start your 34 hour restart at Sunday at 1:00 am even though you have been off already?
