I have a husband with brand new Class A CDL and confused as heck about what to do with it. I have studied these forums for him since he is not exactly computer literate and there are so many opinions about different companies. So here is my "what would you do?" question.
He is 58 years old, perfect driving and criminal record. Never driven other than training while getting his CDL at the local drivers school. Overweight -so not exactly prime for jumping up and down on flat beds. Lives in Little Rock, Arkansas. Obviously he would prefer to have a nice little local or regional route so he has some home time, but mostly he just doesn't want to do the NYC routes. Any suggestions on companies for newbies? I've got to get him on the road soon but he is afraid of signing with the wrong company. He doesn't need tuition reimbursement so would that help make a difference on whether or not he would be bound if the company sucked?

I may be wrong, but I believe most copmanies that give tuition reimbursement set it up so they pay as you go..I am not sure, but if he paid for the school,I dont think companies will make him stay there for a year. Most pay tuition reimburrsement at a pretty slow rate also...

Living in Little Rock he should try Cal-Ark or Continental. Calark is over the on I-30 near Otter Creek. Continental is over off of I440 ext 5 down by Averitt. I've worked for both of those companies and was treated real well and got by the house all the time. Southern Refridgerated Texarkana is not bad either. But as far as Little Rock those two I mentioned would be good choices starting out. Hope this helps. Cya around town.

Thanks for the replies. We were under the impression that Cal-Ark only hired experienced drivers and did not know about Continental. I'll get something out to them today and check that out.
After 30 years of being a small business owner, this is all unfamiliar territory and we really don't have anyone to compare notes with, so your opinions really mean a lot.
I am sure this decision wouldn't seem quite so daunting if it weren't snow & ice season. (Not really used to that in Arkansas you know). But we really can't wait for the spring thaw! Thanks again....advise is sooo appreciated. -
I am based out of NLR. I am with maveirick. He is not to old for flats. One of our drivers has been flatbedding for over 40 years. Plus you never see a chubby flatbedder. I lost 30 lbs in 3 months with them!

I could lose 30lbs myself good job!

I have been with them 6 months now. I figured I would lose another 30, but 30 was my cut off for weight loss! -
Watch out Jenny Craig!! Actually, I did talk with a very nice Maverick recruiter. Perhaps I was wrong in what I believe the physical work load to be with flat bed, but it just seemed to be one of those positions best left to the "younger guys". What do you think?
Thanks Little Rock area drivers! Coffee at Waffle House will be on me if we get through this thing. -

Good point but I hope that is not the case. How far does your route take you? You know, another thing that has been suggested is trying to connect with the company doing that Fayetteville Shale gas drilling. You know anything about that? It seems to be a big deal in the Searcy area.
