Hey all, I've been browsing your forums and the net for the past couple of weeks trying to get as much info as I can about starting out in truck driving. I live in NC and do not have a CDL. I know a school would be the best way to go in terms of getting a CDL, but my finances and low paying job won't allow for that at this point. I've always been interested in truck driving, just never looked into it much. Before you say it, I'll go ahead.. stay away from CR England, got it. A good friend of mine works for KLLM and he enjoys it coming from Stevens and before that had taken a $6500 loan to go thru schooling for a CDL. I contacted a KLLM recruiter and he told me they couldn't hire me on because I didn't reside in one of the 3 states they are out of. I want to do OTR/long hauling, I don't mind team driving, I know i need to committ to somewhere around a year of experience with one of these companies before looking to get on with a better company. I know going with a starter company can have many disadvantages, I just don't know how many of them are out there that take NC residents and I'm trying not to take the plunge into an exciting new career with a nightmare of a company. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You have to be willing to be gone for long, long periods of time. If you can start by looking at community colleges that offer cdl a training. Or you can do swift and join the driver training academy in PHX. You have to be willing to leave NC for a while

Right around $3K and all your weekends for a couple of months can get you your CDL in NC. I just finished CDL school in NC. Not sure how you go about it but there are ways to get grants to pay for most if not all of the school cost. I man in school with me said in only paid around $800 and a grant took care of the rest. I believe I heard some one say to check with the employment office about grants for CDL students. What part of NC do you live?

Thanks for the list Chinatown, I'll check those out. I'm out of Richmond County.

Check into Cape Fear Community College, in Wilmington, NC. Very good truck driving course, and they have student loans available

Skip celadon per their scam on ripping off o/o with fuel surcharges

You could check out Crosscountry Truck driving school in Thomasville, NC. While I do have some bones I could pick with them, for the most part it is a good school. Just finished with them 2 weeks ago.

I'm in NC also, I'm going to Henderson. Though I can't speak from experience, what I read seems fair and they start out at .38cpm once solo
Chinatown Thanks this.
