There's some talk of building a bigger porch on the Honeydew store so there's more room for porch sitters. We'll save you a spot. I have a lot of family in the Mattole country. Some are "farmers" and some are not. Good people, mostly.
I think the biggest mistake newcomers make is asking too many questions. You have to content yourself with what people say, not what you want to know.
Tourists are seen as a source of income but otherwise totally ignored.
My Dad always said that as soon as you start down into the Mattole Valley you want to set your watch back...about twenty years. He was right.

I grew up in a rural town that was much like Honeydew, and like Happy Camp in that we had mills. I fell in love with the Mattole Valley when I wasn't much more than a baby. My uncle had a ranch between Ettersburg and Honeydew that he was logging, for a couple of summers my dad went up and hauled logs for him. My mom and I would go up and stay for week or so several times during the summer. Redwoods & sunshine, cookouts and swimming in the river with my cousins, some very happy memories from a childhood filled with them. I've been drawn back to the Kings Range/Lost Coast/Mattole Valley all my life. I used to take a trip on my adventure bike every year, up from Usal to Four Corners then explore wherever I felt like at the moment, Honeydew over to South Fork, Ruth Lake, down to Covelo, I just love all that country. Those are the places that will keep me living in California until I die.

I know what you mean. I've left a couple of times chasing some pie-in-the-sky deal but I always wound up back in this part of the country..
This is home. I'll play my string out here.

I read last week that there is so little left to accomplish by the government of Commiefornia that they are preparing legislation for a Bill of Rights for cats and dogs.

I have little to no tolerance for people who allergic to the truth! There are some stories that can be funny, but sometimes you rely on a guy, only to find out he was a stand-up philosopher. One driver here had his fuel pump go out. Our resident Heavy told him that he could get the pump at wholesale. "Sign me up!" said Tim. 4 weeks after the guy never showed up, he learned his lesson.

This one is new to me. If you're interested, then research it as much as you can. It seem really good on the surface.

I agree I'm a night owl so I prefer night driving as well.

I dont mind it too much as I do drive half of the night, but I do not like all of the animals meeting me in the middle of the road....
