Yeah, Florida Rock & Tank is a good start to the high paying jobs. If at all possible, I'd do that and put the CDL-B on the back burner for something to fall back on.JakeStateFaarm9324 Thanks this.

Yeah I guess it's better than being OTR I'll take that over gas station showers lol OTR pay for newbies now days is sad lolChinatown Thanks this.

I did OTR for most of my career because that's what I wanted. Made decent money also to take care of a wife and 4 children. Not for everyone though; some marriages can't survive on that schedule. I did ok though, no complaints.JakeStateFaarm9324 and bryan21384 Thank this.

Well....most people don't strike gold their first year. It's all about what you're willing to put in it. The more you put into trucking, the more you get out of it. That's whether you run local, OTR, regional, etc. This industry, probably more than any other industry I've been in, has been contingent on what I give to it. I did ok my first year, but I had a willingness to stay out for 4 or 5 weeks. That's what it takes to make money doing OTR. To get a great paying local job, it takes a different kind of sacrifice. Sometimes you gotta sacrifice pay early. Other times you gotta do OTR to get to where you want to for the long term. Most importantly, you gotta get experience. That's the most valuable thing. Just thinking out load lolhomeskillet and Chinatown Thank this.

Yeah what I've found to work for me at least research wise is that Local will pay a little better than OTR at least for the first year when it comes to Petro Jobs specifically. Example: $25 an hour plus guaranteed OT vs what .41 cents a mile OTR and they cut off your miles because your new. Now after first yr maybe that changes but according to what I found out this seems to be the best route for a newbie. I'm referring specifically to Eagle Transport. So every area is different. But from what everyone has told me these OTR carriers tell you one thing then get you six states away in their company truck and now your getting something completely different and they do it like that because they know you can't just leave. You have to pay for a flight back or a bus and who wants to do that. This is just what I've heard from experienced truckers on these forums at least. Also if I have to take a pay cut my first year I'd rather do it sleeping in my bed. But I'm a rookie. I'm simply going off my research. Any advice from experienced drivers is always helpful regardlessbryan21384 Thanks this.

Some of what they say is true. It all depends on the carrier. While 41 cpm is low, there are other places where rookies can make more.than that. The amount of money one makes OTR is more so dependent on the combination of the carrier and how the driver operates himself. I don't think I've ever driven for a carrier that had the highest cpm in the industry, but I've worked for carriers that could keep me busy so that made up for the lower cpm. I understand though....if you can hourly and overtime, that to me is the only way local makes sense.JakeStateFaarm9324 Thanks this.
