So I recently switched from OTR to a local job. My route starts at 1pm and SHOULD end at 9~10pm according to their schedule, but I've never been home before 12am.The place I get unloaded at is a disorganized congested mess. It's so packed that there's always a long line of trucks extending out into the road just to get in the place. It gets so bad sometimes that the police have to come out but there's nothing they can really do. Then you have ####ing OTR guys taking their 10hr break in the middle of the road, and other truckers cutting in line. It takes about 2-3 hours just to get in, and even when I'm in a dock, it takes another 30mins to an hour to unload because there's no room to put the freight so I'm basically just waiting for them make room so I can put my stuff somewhere. If there was space I could unload myself in 10 minutes max. This means I'm getting home at around 1am-2am everyday.
So that's 12-13 hours I'm working per day, 6 days a week. It's $21/hr, but I can't help but feel this is going to burn me out. 12hrs*6days=72hrs+ which would obviously put me in HoS violation too but it's impossible to run this without going over. I don't think this company cares about HoS since we're local. I'm 'home daily' but not really. I have about 3 hours to myself when I'm home. When I was doing OTR I stayed out 3 weeks and got 4 days of hometime. Worth it?
Local job long hours worth it?

What area?

I was a "regional" driver practically my whole career, and that's the price you pay for tucking the kids in at night, or seeing their soccer game. My schedule for years, was up at midnight, leave the barn by 1am, and many times, I didn't get back home until 3pm. Then a soccer game, or something, try and hit the hay by 9pm to do it again at midnight. I knew road drivers that got more sleep than me.

You only need to answer one question. What is being home every day worth to me? If it’s not worth that much, there’s no point doing it. Any local job will be 12-14 hour days.
For me, I have a 2 year old daughter and it’s hard for me to put a price on what it’s worth to be with her every night and of course my wife too. If I didn’t have them I wouldn’t do it another week.Tb0n3, Badmon, Northeast Hillbilly and 4 others Thank this. -
12 hrs a day, sleeping, showering and eating at your own house everyday. No searching for a parking spot.
Living at your house.
Vs
14 hrs a day, sleeping in a truck, showering at a truck stop, eating in a truck or truck stop, searching for parking.
Visiting your house once a month.
Crappy, slow shippers/receivers will be found in both options.
I’m choosing local every time.dwells40, Brettj3876, Tb0n3 and 6 others Thank this. -
I'd choose local. I've never seen anybody washing their feet in my bathroom sink.

Is it time in a half after 40, or $21/hr for all hours worked?
Northeast Hillbilly and sevenmph Thank this. -
My personal advice is keep the job, but keep looking for other local jobs that won't burn you out.truckguy391, Badmon, sevenmph and 4 others Thank this. -
Your now allowed 14 hours per day in 150 mile radius. That should make you feel better. 60/70 rule dont apply on the 150 miles. You can work everyday for the rest of your life of you want!
