Hi all, I see that a lot of people that either just got their cdl or are in the process, are under the impression that they have to start with a ###### otr company (like swift, Stevens, cre, ect) to get the experience so they can someday get a better job driving local or regional. This is most the time not the case. It may take a little while to find someone to hire you but you will find it.

Some jobs post that they require drivers to have 6mo, 1yr experience. Don't let that discourage you as in some cases they will hire new drivers. Also it's helpful to know someone within the company you want to work for as in this world it's not what you know but who you know. When I got my license two years ago i went to many local driving places filling out apps. The one job I really wanted said they required one year experience. I applied there anyway. But I figured I needed to start with a big company to get the experience because know ones going to hire me.

So I went with swift and did the orientation then went home after and three or four weeks later i finally got a trainer to go out with. I left Sunday and we went out to Indiana and on Monday I got a call from the job I really wanted and they said to come in the next week for my interview. I told my trainer about this and he told me that I should go for it because my driving skills were above average for the average beginner. He was fed up with swift anyway and he called dispatch saying he wanted to go home and he ended up quitting lol.

Any way two years later I'm still at the same job and loving it. Even tho they advertise 1yr exp. they still hire new drivers. There's many good companies around here that do hire new drivers. I wanted to share my story give new drivers some hope. I live in New England so there are a lot of companies around here. I know some people live in parts of the country where there limited. But I say at least give it a try.

Good post. I've seen new drivers get good local jobs simply by applying. I've seen CDL school grads get top paying union trucking jobs. It's a myth that one must pay their dues by going OTR first. Ignore the part of the ad that states, "must have "X" amount of experience." Apply with companies you like & want to work for.

My first job was with a starter company & 3 months later I was hired by a company that the ad said, "must have 3 yrs. OTR experience." It was hauling those high dollar boats. Sent in those mailin apps. you find those little truck stop magazines. Can even do them online now.

My son got his CDL & his first job was with a hazmat/tanker OTR company, making the big bucks.

Many of us don't want local, which helps those that do.

What a lot of new drivers do not understand is that a good company has no need to advertise for drivers. They get their drivers off of applications that they have filed away. You'll never find these types of companies on the computer, so like I've always said get out and beat the bushes. Go for the best and work down.

Well I applied for ABF and nothing came out of that., their recruiter was at my school saying they will take newbies couse they cant find experienced drivers in the area.
They are a union place-top pay and benefits. They only hire part time and odd hours and you have to work your way up.

People have to understand, the road test for those companies is hard and those trks are hard to drive in the city.

When I started with my company(bozzutos) I was part time for a couple weeks and worked those weird hours, but I started in the spring so I went full time rather quickly and then they went on a hiring spree and hired new drivers out of school. Now if you saw the add for Bozzutos, they posted 2yrs exp so you see my point. Just depends when you applied for abf because they may have had enough drivers and especially now that winters coming, company's don't hire as much because it gets slow. Best time to apply IMO is late winter, early spring when the work load starts getting heavy.

This is SO true. new drivers need to think out of the box and just apply and look around. I know a recent driving school grad that was interested in heavy haul(those big windmills). He got a job with a company hauling them first driving an pickup as an escort... 6 months later hes driving a big rig making $70,000 to $80,000....

You never know until you try.

Does anyone have a short list of good companies that might hire newbies in the northeast that don't advertise that are also the better paying carriers........
    Thank you in advance.
