My husband is unable to go OTR because of Fatigue issues. We are aware that it is hard to get local jobs or at least will take some time.
Is it better to personally go to places and ask them if they need drivers over applying on the internet? We have been doing both. Some places such as UPS ect. when
you apply online it went straight to no. Should we go there also and speak with someone? Also do the endorsements help even though he has no exp? He applied for his Hazmat and is going for his passenger endorsement this week because he is going to apply for buses also if he can't get any local work. If anyone knows of other places we could check that would be good also. He is able to do some loading and unloading. Anything over 50 lbs he is better with using a dolly, handcart ect. (Sorry if I get some of the terms wrong). We are willing to relocate if it is further then where we live. We are in Northern NJ.

not to be critical at all but with fatigue issues is driving the right career for him
i personally get more tired driving around northern nj then out on the open interstate
ups , fed ex etc usually require you to start on the dock then move into the trucks
food service is driver unloading
i see all that as causing fatigue
i am 59 and like just backing into a door and writing a lumper check -
To dove tail with Pete there... Passenger endorsement when fatigue is a problem? Soinds like a combination for disaster to me
-
Yea, he's not sure if it will affect him or not because he's very active and has no restrictions from the doctor. If he gets a job and it seems to be too much
than he will have to leave and figure out something else. There is no reason he can't at least do part time. -
it probalby makes a difference wha kind of fatigue it comes from
Hep C is never ending good one da in bed next 10 -
He has MS and gets tired at the end of the day. He has never physically drove 10 hours straight without a break. He enjoyed driving the Trailers on the highway while in school and never encountered any issues. I think if he learned more about the job he would have a better sense of what he is able to do. Is team driving better? Would he have to drive 10 hours straight without any breaks? Does it depend on the jobs that are given?

Well by this time next year it will be illegal to drive for 10 hours straight. The most you will be able to do is 8 hours without a 1/2 hour break. But that won't come online until next July.
Of course that's really neither here nor there as far as your current situation goes. I think the bigger issue is that you seem to feel that local work will involve less 'work' than OTR driving. It generally doesn't. In fact in some cases, it involves quite a bit more work. The regulations allow for essentially the same amount of on duty time regardless of whether you drive local or OTR. The only difference is that you get go home for your 10 hour rest period instead of being stuck in a truck stop somewhere. So if 14 hour days are a deal breaker for him, then he really might want to seek other career options I'm afraid. It is possible to find local work that generally involves less than a 14 hour duty day. But it is very unlikely that you will find that sort of situation with no experience. Not impossible, but highly unlikely.
Something else to keep in mind though is that lots of OTR guys take breaks. In fact there are some who try to avoid doing more than 10 hours on duty per day because they end up getting more miles that way. Limit your duty time to less than 10 hours per day and you can work (and get miles) 7 days a week for weeks on end without ever having to take a 34 hour reset. But the bottom line is trucking simply isn't going to be good fit for anyone who truly has issues with fatigue.KMac Thanks this. -
