Local just in the nick of time!

    I was scrambling to find a local job before heading out OTR again. I was at the end of my reset and the phone rang while I was in the shower.

    My bags were packed and I was ready to head back out.

    A local tow/ recovery/ heavy equipment delivery company that I applied for told me the insurance company was willing to cover me and ask me to come in.

    I threw my PPE in the car and drove to their yard as fast as I could. I interviewed with the owner, was offered the job and went home to call my company to quit.

    My company's safety director was happy for me for having found something local.

    Went back to my new yard, jumped in a rollback Peterbuilt with an experienced guy and started a full day of pulling cars and delivering cherry pickers and forklifts.

    I'm only one of two guys with an A class CDL and this place has two semis and a few lowboys. Those will be for delivering heavy equipment to job sites for a rental company contract we hold.

    Driving that single today was a heck of a lot different than pulling a 48' trailer. I was making wide turns and paying more attention to my mirrors than what old school was used to but I finally let loose and just ran hard and fast.

    I never imagined I'd end up doing rollback recovery work. And the thought of pulling heavy equipment has me excited.

    Lots to learn and I'm about the happiest guy in this city right now.

    I get to sleep in my bed with my wife and I get to play with my daughter every day.


    When I start delivering oversized / overweight equipment, I'll be bugging the guys over at the forum for that.

    Right now, I just want to say thank you guys for answering questions that got me to this point.

    Keep it between the ditches!

    Congrats man. Good luck. I wnt from otr to local semi delivery to being a yard jockey. I never thought I would be a yard dog but I enjoy it alot

    Congrats on your new gig.

    Just make sure when you start moving the bigger stuff, do not let anyone rush you into undersecuring a load, no matter how or why they try. There's an old saying, you can "over"secure all day every day, but you'll only undersecure a load once!

    Take the time to learn the proper methods and amounts of securement needed, and don't EVER cut corners! When in doubt, throw an extra chain or three. Don't let any jackwagon give you grief if they think it's taking too long. Better to get it on and chained right once, than having to call a crane to come pick your load off the ground where you lost it.

    Always do it the right way. Your life and those lives around you may depend on it. Stay safe driver!

    I understand. I used to over secure my lumber or steel loads.

    My first day towing a car, I didn't think the four straps on the tires were enough so I put an extra chain with two hooks to the winch and kept that tightened up just to make me feel more at ease.

    The guy showing me the ropes said it was a bit much but said it was fine as long as I could get it done without tacking on too much time.

    I'll be attending safety classes at the heavy equipment rental place, next week. In the mean time, I'm studying up securement here and on the you tubes.

    Yeah, well it takes as long as it takes...lol
    My last job I was running an 8-axle RGN setup, hauling (mostly) tracked machines that were top heavy, grossing up to 160,000lbs. My boss was a total jackwad who would stomp around and yell if he thought things were taking too long (always on the phone, mind you- never had the balls to do it in person even though he was 5" taller than me and outweighed me by about 80lbs.).
    I just told him that the jobsite would still be there whenever I got there. Only difference is there would be no accidents or wrecker bills on the way. Usually set him off even more....lol
