Hi everyone. I'm currently in my first trucking job. I work for a local farmer. I make $50 per local load, plus $11 per hour when I am not driving. I am required to load and unload myself and take care of the repair and maintenance of the truck myself. While there is a mechanic on staff at the farm, he unfortunately is not willing to fix the truck and my employer doesn't seen interested in forcing him to do it. I usually do two loads per day, sometimes three. What I'm not liking is that I am expected to do a lot more than drive. I work 6 days a week, occasionally 7. My average take home pay for two weeks is about $900.
Do you think that I would make more if I went to work for a company doing OTR trucking?

$900 should be one weeks pay...not 2.
And your truck should be kept in good working order...
It will depend on your work history and where you live....but give Maverick Transportation a call. -
You should be making that or more every week.
Good advice from Ridgerunner665 about Maverick.
Two other good choices are Melton Truck Lines and Schneider tanker division.
Plus, with these 3 companies, you will have a full benefits package. -
450 a week.....

$450 per week is good pay if the guy is willing to work for that. You are worth what you are worth. The farmer pays that much because there is someone out there willing to work for that. If there was not then he would raise the pay. Its called the law of supply and demand and its the most powerful force on Earth and it drives everything. Don't blame the farmer, blame the free market. We know that all those bottom feeder mega trucking companies pay practically nothing too. They do it because there is a never ending supply of people out there willing to work for those wages.

950 is good pay after 30 years? What about someone who just started. Isn't 450 pretty good pay for a beginner?

I'm a beginner and I wouldn't do that job for $450 a week, or even $650 a week. If the company won't maintain their own equipment, they sure don't care about you either.

How many hours a week are you working? If you're burning up your 70 every week then it's not very good money. If you have no bills, no rent/mortgage then it's good money.
