I would like to know what the hours for local truck drivers are like. Are they similar to OTR? *edit-How many night shifts do you have to work? Are you ever left waiting for a load for hours?
Local trucking hours vs. OTR.

it depends what you're hauling, what kind of company it is.

I haul sand and gravel locally for a living. During busy season we get over 12 hours a day easy, sometimes 14-15. But slow season is here now, and I have not worked in 4 days. Thank goodness today and yesterday are paid holidays.

Yes it depends on what you haul. I pulled a dump trailer back and forth from philly to newark.n.j . started around 5am or so and was done by about 2-230 pm. bankers hours ! but i kept coming down with colds from the incinerator ash . if you're a city driver running p&d all day you'll be working a lot of hours with a lot of stops. beverage drivers usually start in the wee hours so i guess you'd get home by dinner time.

Hey I live in philly how do I get a job like that?
-
Not at all...as far as log book hours there the same in that you can only "work" 70 hours in 8 days but with OTR we're in the truck 24/7 for weeks at a time.....so you may or may not be working during that time but your still not home.....

This was 15 years ago I don't think the company I worked for is still around. You might want to take a ride up to G.R.O.W.S. landfill in bucks county and you'll see all the different trucks that go in and out of there. Ask some drivers for info. I'm sure you'll get some good info that way. I doubt you'll be allowed to just hang out there but maybe park on the side street.

Unless you're on a 60/7 schedule then you can only work 60 hours.

I run local/regional I haul cement products mostly. Days run long at times out over night. But I am home several times during the week, and off week ends.
The truck and trailers are always with me. This year has been a little slow probably around 50K, last several years have been 62 to 65 K.
Even though I'm only working 4 days a week I still make more than most OTR drivers. -
I run a lot of 500 mile turns at night and am home everyday with a very rare over nighter and I make a decent paycheck. It fluctuates depending on whether I get a few local runs during the week.
