Hello guys i eventually want to go local food/beverage but i am torn on something. I am starting school Monday and graduate in October. Im thinking id like to get on with the local beverage distributors or possibly food distributors. But i also know that the typical path in this industry is to go otr for at least a year and then come back local. The local companies have told me they really only care about having class a license, and a good driving record. Otr experience isnt necessary because the two jobs are completely different. What would you guys recommend
Local vs otr for first job

If you can go local to start then do so. Most local companies don't care about otr experience and some even look down on it. At the interview for my first local job I was told that it was hard work and they didn't need a fat steering wheel holder in the truck.

It is a fairytale that you have to "Pay your dues" OTR before you can get a local job. Hundreds, if not thousands of local drivers have never spent a night on the road unless by some unforseen circumstance.
ExOTR Thanks this. -
Depends on what you want to do...
Can honestly make great money running local beverage or foodservice, just depends on if your body can keep up with it. Still be able to move into LTL a year later as well. -
Well here's my confusion and maybe someone else can explain it to me. My local pepsi distributor told me that they do hire without experience but prefer experience. Then ive take to coca cola distributor and they told me pretty much the same thing. Then the few food service guys I've talked to have told me theyd rather have experience but otr isnt considered good experience.
Heres where my issue comes in, if they all want experience but not necessarily otr experience where the heck does that leave me? Also no issue slinging cases i worked at dg as the only stocker stocking hundreds of items a day. Also at McDonald's i constantly handle cases of food and drinkJumbo Thanks this. -
A lot of distributors, and LTL, prefer to have you start on the dock while training with another driver.
Foodservice will normally assign you as a helper, and train you for a few months before letting you become a lead driver.Jumbo Thanks this. -
Local pepsi distributor isn't that way. Believe it or not they don't even have helpers. Im willing to start out as a helper with coke, or food service but with a class a license i would think i was overqualified. Shouldn't someone with a class a be a driver and not a helper

I went otr before doing local now. Every local driver here that never went otr is a little whinny bch. They drive like crap, they complain from too much work, cry because of 14 hour days, and it just keeps going. Otr has it's whinny bch drivers too but hell, we're here to work not kiss ### and ask for days off.

Long days don't bother me ive worked many a 12 hour shifts at McDonald's and dollar general

I have experience in McDonald's as a kitchen staff keeping drinks and meat and stuff stocked as well as cooking. I also have experience in retail stocking. Do you think that coupled with a clean mvr and class a license would be enough
