I keep a key on the ring that never leaves my pocket, the key in my ignition is all by itself and never leaves the ignition until I park the truck: and then I just hide it in the cab.

I locked myself out once about 30 years ago so I developed this habit :)

Very true, at this stage of the game I'm sure most truck thiefs no where to looks for that spare key.
I've just always kept my spare on my personal key ring. The other key is on a ring by it self.

I was at a truck stop in Vado, NM. Late one afternoon, I had just backed into a spot for the evening when I noticed this young man about 300 yards away who seemed to be making a beeline for my truck. When he was about 50 yards away, I rolled my window down and watched him as he approached. I think it was July or August and pretty hot out & this kid was sweating but smiling. He then proceeded to tell me about how he was in the fuel island at the truck stop across the road and that he had accidentally locked his keys in the running truck, along with his wallet and cellphone. He was fresh off the trainers truck and this was his first solo run. He drove for the same company I did and needed help contacting his DM or road breakdown for help. After contacting road breakdown and explaining his situation, they said there wasn't anything they could do for him since it was his fault.
I couldn't believe it! I then called them myself. The voice on the other end told me the same thing, even directed me to the page of the drivers handbook that stated that the company was not responsible. I then asked if they could at least provide a number to a local locksmith. No dice, again his fault, they weren't responsible, I couldn't believe it, and still get mad just thinking about it. I found a locksmith on my phone, that was only 72 miles away. The kid didn't want to pursue that option due to costs & said he was thinking of just leaving the truck where it was and hitchhiking home. I told him I didn't blame him. I had even suggested breaking a window. Shortly thereafter, he thanked me for the help and headed back in the direction he came from. I'm not sure what he did but the truck wasn't there when I left in the morning. Ever since then, I have a key stashed on the outside of the truck.

I hope he knew that abandoning the truck would have incurred far greater costs than a locksmith would have. Lol what an idiot. I'm thinking he was probably a scammer.

Ok. I challenge you. As I said, that was on a truck I drove way back when. Try to find my key now.

Of course, that would mean you have to know the exact truck I drive now and where I am right now. Neither of which is public information.

So how is what I posted going to help someone get the key to my truck? Seriously.

If he was a scammer, he should have gotten an academy award. He was ill over the situation (or maybe it was because I was laughing about it at first) & had a company I D card. I'm guessing he either broke the window or found someone with the same brand tractor.
I was just amazed by the company & their policy's about it.
