yes...but you have to show them both if you get pulled in.
What is the basis behind your question though? -
Yes you can. Why you would is another question though . You can use as many log books as you want as long as they all say the same thing.
If you have more than one telling different stories then you will have problems !!! -
As long as they BOTH show the exact same thing, yes you can. In fact, in certain situations you might be REQUIRED to have more than one log book. For example, if you do regular work for more than one carrier, each carrier needs to have an original log sheet detailing your hours of service. If one carrier uses paper logs, and the other carrier uses e-logs, then you would have to keep both forms. If you work for 3 different carriers, you would need 3 log books...but still, they would ALL have to report the same exact activity. As long as there are no discrepancies in what each log book says about the way you spent your time, there is no problem.

Here is the basis behind the question. The company I use to work for installed the Rand Mcnally TND 710 fleet edition in their trucks and we as drivers were told we had to use the R.M. and our paper log books. So when and If they get pulled in for a level 1 or 2 and the d.o.t. officer sees the R.M. unit and you allready gave him your paper log book, which we were told to always use and turn in every week as usual, but had no signed written statement from any executive of the companyor the saftey dept. in our trucks letting the d.o.t. officer know that these unit are on a trial basis only. So if the electronic unit is wrong but your log book is right who wins and who gets a citation for running 2 log books?
-
Its not recommended anything by e logs is min by min paper is 15min increments. Logs won't match
-
If you are working for only one company and you show a dot office 2 logs you better hope they match exactly, then he is going to ask you why do you need 2 log books.
-
Fro the Dept. of transportation. Running more than one log book is illegal. and if you do have an electronic log unit in trial basis in your truck, you better hope you have a signed letter from the company's saftey in your glove box to show right then and there the units are on trial basis or you get shut down after you get your citation.

Every company I've ever worked for that has tried implementing a new system always keeps employees on the old system while testing the new system...so during that overlap, employees use both. This gives the employees time to learn the new system while still covering the companies rear by ensuring all of the paperwork they need is getting to them in an acceptable form. Sometimes there are issues with the new system that need to be worked out before full implementation can take place...and I'm sure DOT is going to understand that. Your company isn't the first to try out some form of e-log...so I'm sure they've run across drivers with both paper and e-logs for the same company before. I'd be willing to bet MOST of the companies that have gone to e-logs have went through a period of time where at least SOME drivers were logging both ways while corporate figured out exactly what they were working with. That said, I wouldn't worry about it. Keep them as close as possible and that's about all you can do.
cdreid Thanks this.
