I got a log violation due to my mentor at swift. he was a good guy, but he's old school and "shaves" his time to average his speed. Running through the midwest, west, and south west it is easy to ACTUALLY average 60mph. But Swift dings you if you show an average of 60, so I'm trapped either way.
Anyway. I saw the log that he had me fix because of a couple corrections (make a new page.) I logged arriving at Atlanta at 8am and I saw where he had me fix it to show Atlanta at 7:30am. Well, my DM called me and said that they compared the qualcomm data, truck data against our logs and I got a log violation because I showed being in ATL at 7:30am when we were actually 20 miles away.. -There's that 8am that I WAS GOING TO LOG!
I wouldn't mind dragging my mentor down with me because this is NOW an inconvenience and I will have a very small check next week because of home time and NOW I haave to go take a darn log class in Phoenix again.. because of him. THAT is what burns me. I called him and told him what was up and he tells me just not to sweat it and take the 3 hour class. That's not the point.
THAT was one of the things that bugged me about being on his truck. He wouldn't accept my GPS location that I logged, he would have me put "X" town or whatever. And he had me shave time off the logs so we could run more. Nothing drastic, but maybe saved an hour a day which I don't see as being a big deal. I've been on my own now for three days and did 2 loads by my self with no problems. I log legal.. I don't give a crap if he can run more than me.
Ideas?? Questions, comments, problems?
Log violations BECAUSE of my Mentor.

Velveta,
cheese.....goes go good with wine !!! -
^ why even respond then if you're not going to help..
I'm half tempted to sell this guy out and drag him down with me. Misery loves company. -
Learn your lesson from this. Log it as it happens. You drive for a Big Brother company, they will KNOW where you are every time you pull the binders. You are in charge of your truck and how to run and log DO NOT shave your time, now that you have been hit once they will be watching you all the more.
Yes having to go do the stupid class is f'd up but be thankful you didnt get a more drastic punishment. Bite your tounge and don't turn to this yutz for anymore advice. I am guessing that you no longer run in his truck and therefore have your own ride. RUN IT LEGAL if you have a question about logging something call your logs department, if they ask why you didnt call your mentor tell them that the last time you took his advice you got dinged and leave it at that.
Be safe -
^ That works.. I'm on my own truck now and I'm just gonna log legal.. It's also less exhausting that way. No wonder why I was so darn tired when I was on his truck. He had me run a couple 10's when in actuality, I was probably pushing an 11. That and his clunking around woke me up easily. But that's besides the point. He said he's already had a log violation, so I just hope he gets his eventually.

Do your penance, log it legal from now on and forget it. Do you think you're the first student to be wacked because of your logs?
you won't be on this guy's truck anymore.
If asked directly about it, simply state, "I must have mis understood my trainer's guidance" and leave it at that.
No good can come from TRYING to drag him down and a lot of harm CAN come.rocknroll nik, Big Don and gdyupgal Thank this. -
he will trust me on that!!! One thing I learned when I was at Celadon is to log it as it happens, you fudge on bunk time when you are at a shipper or whatever but never on your driving time....it's too easy for them to nail ya.
Keep your nose clean and you'll be fine, make sure your log book is neat too, if a bear or dot man wants to see your book and it looks like a mess he's gonna start looking harder. So try not to think about that yutz like you said he'll get his and they are probably waiting until they have him on plenty of stauff so they can can him and guess what no unemployment and bad marks on his dac. You got your truck man and YOU are the captain of that ship....dispatch may give you marching orders but it's up to you to get from point A to B safely, legally and on time. Don't let them push you around but don't fight them either....it's a fine line and it's hard to figure it out...there are no clear cut rules of engagement but the first thing is to drive legal....if they see that they will hesitate to try and get you to fudge to do a run......and believe me they will try they will try -
In life we must accept the things we can not change, you got burned, was it his fault, sort of, your new, you dont know any better, you do now. This is how lifes lessons are taught.
Do what you have to do to get it behind you and get on with your life, something like this is not worth the hassle of trying to fight it, you have bigger fish to fry and money to make.
That is what you need to be concerned with.
You are on your own truck so he isint going to screw you any more.
I would say get out there put it in the left lane and get on with life, but cause you are in a newtered truck, get out there, put it in the right lane, and some time this week get on with life.rocknroll nik Thanks this. -
how do the ding you for logging at 60 i work for swift also and i always log at 63 and have never had a problem
-
i never average my times. if you average your times you will eventually get caught. there is no way you can run 63 miles an hour every day all day consistently with construction and other traffic on the road. eventually they should catch on if not they aren't doing their job as a company to make sure their drivers are running legally and correctly. turning a blind eye to a obvious log "fluff" isnt making you or anyone else a better driver. once you go to electronic logs and it auto records your drive time you'll be screwed.
