Yeah SP is really nice don’t get me wrong, It’s a super good job.. but i like the fact of making a little more money, not having to answer to 10 people, having a truck I want and how I want it. I’m based out of Burney, so competition isn’t very high as even now the loggers are looking for more gypos, plus this new mill they are replacing the old one with can run 144 truck loads a day, they are going to be crying for logs

    REO6205 Thanks this.

Scratch the first reason off your list. Making more money isn’t a given at all. The possibility of making more money is there, but so is the chance of losing your butt. You have to do it because you want to and have the desire to be your boss.

    Emgee and Ruthless Thank this.

Grew up in a logging town and my neighbor was a log truck driver. If you're working 65hrs a week now as a company guy plan on working 75-80 as an O/O. You get done hauling all week then you get to wash it, grease it, fix it, service it on the weekends. Logging would be the last line of work I would do as an O/O unless everything was brand spanking new and had ZERO PAYMENTS to make. I would highly suggest you stay as a company guy for this line of work. Especially in California where all the environmental wackos are. Its bad nuff with them type up here in the PNW.

Thanks for the replies! This is why I am starting early with research and getting a game plan.. Like I said this isn’t til 5-6 years out after I save enough money to buy a truck cash.. definitely looking to have 0 debt when I start. At the end of the day I really want to be my own boss, so maybe I’ll figure out doing a little OTR might be a better option. BTW I live in an area with very low cost of living, and I’m living in my parents RV trailer rent free so I can save all my money. Again thanks for the replies every bit of information helps!
