Any loners here? Is this a good job for a loner or would it make things worse? I have basically no family most of them have severe issues mentally and otherwise and my father was never really a father to begin with. I have no real friends just acquaintances most because of my choice. I lived a life of hell because of my "family" so i choose to be alone to avoid any possible conflict. That's another reason why i work on the side alone doing electrical work and handyman work because i can't work around people all day for years.

So is this a job for a loner or will this make me go off the deep end?

Nobody can answer that question but you. But if you have nothing holding you at home and don't have a problem being alone then I would say you would be ahead of a lot of new drivers who don't think about this aspect at first and can't handle it. Gives you lots of time 2 self evaluate and contemplate and etc. just my 2 cents. Take it as you will

There are plenty of "Loners" in trucking. Just go into a truck stop and hear a trucker ramble on and on with the cashier or waitress about something that she does not care about. Or even the drivers lounge and see drivers watch Law and Order marathon without moving

Trucking is a good job for a loner, especially flatbed or tanker work.
Dry van is ok for loners, but reefer drivers have to deal with big mouth losers at grocery warehouses.

If you're a "social butterfly," you'd best fly right by a trucking job. ANY trucking job. Because, even if you are not OTR, and are home "every night," you will be working a whole lot of 12 hour days, and often a lot longer. It doesn't leave time for any type of a party guy to be happy.
This is an excellent job for a loaner. Hell, I'm one myself to a very great extent, and found that there was a whole lot to like about this industry.
Keep in mind though, that you are not nearly as "alone" as you used to be. If I'd had to deal with the micromanagement that goes on in today's trucking, I'd have put my walking shoes on long before I did.
Try not to go to work for a "major" outfit. They will screw you, drive you nuts, and then just when you are to the point that they say they will start paying you decent money, they will either find a reason to get rid of you, or will make you so uncomfortable you will quit. Do what you have to, to get some experience, but if you can stay away from Swift, CREngland, Knight, (actually I understand that Knight is not as bad as they used to be...) Schneider, Warner and the like you will be better off.
If you don't already have your class A and endorsements, and you need to go to a driving school, do your best to go with one that is not tied in with the above mentioned outfits. Some of these outfits will advertise "free driving school." But you find that it is only free if you stay with them for a specified period of time. Leaving before that specified time, is in fact, breaking a contract, and can leave you owing thousands for your school.
Try to get your driving school through a community college, or applied technical school. Even if it means you need to borrow a little money from somebody, (or your bank, if your credit is good,) you pay the college the money they want, you get the training you need, and then you can get out and get a job.
Another thing with the above mentioned outfits, is that they will put you with a "trainer" for a time. Now this "trainer," may be a very experienced hand, one with a whole six months or so of experience. Rookies training rookies. Also some of these outfits call these "training jobs," when in fact they are "team drivers." They guy that is supposed to be training you is asleep in the bunk while you are driving. Wake him up to ask him a question and you may have a problem.
Of course, not all trainers are this way, and not all companies that train are this way. But we see enough horror stories here to tell you to be very cautious.
Good luck to you. Jump on in and hang out with all the other "loaners" is the business!:)

You'll meet a lot of nice ppl on the road. From your company, truckstops ,shippers and receivers ect.I did OTR solo for 9 yrs and I was a loner but you also need to be socialable and from your post I don't see that to be a problem.

It's not so bad. Loners are welcome here. I would avoid talking about self mental issues, but you are move than welcome to air mental issues of your homocidal children or something. /teasing. (There is a growing mountain of frowning state laws waiting to take men card away...)

Anyhow... Friends are just that. Not the kind you TAKE home to momma.

Trucker Daddies... these are special. If you encounter one and he is helping you more than you realize. It might be a She, in this cse a Triucking Mama.n

    That's funny.
I have a t-shirt that says exactly that - "Does not Play Well With Others".
    With a snarling bear.
I got it in Montana; a state of loners I think.

My latest t-shirt, from the same place at exit 16, is a BatMoose.
And we all know that the Batman and Meese are solitary creatures.
