Hey y'all! I'm 28 years old and tried college out went for 4 years constantly changing majors and decided that a corporate desk job just wasn't for me. I worked retail for a while and even had a small ebay shop that turned out to be fairly successful, but I decided that i needed to get a new job that payed more so that I could have a solid future. I've always liked driving and the stories weather true or not about the oil fields really got me thinking that I should take a gamble and even if the oil field money wasn't all that great that I'd always have steady good money with a driving job in another part of the industry. I've been lurking on this board for quite a while and finally took the plunge into cdl school paying out of pocket for a 200 hour class at my local community college here in mckinney, tx in november and got my cdl mid december. I got all my endorsements and my background check for hazmat and my new license just came in the mail yesterday. I don't have any specific questions per se but I just wanted to say thanks for all the great info on this board I've really learned a lot and what i've read on this forum really gave me peace of mind that i was making the right decision.

Good for you to go the Community College route! The extra road time and classroom training will be a big benefit to your skills and peace of mind early in your driving career. It's scary to see some of "graduates" from the trucking companies private schools, out on their own after a whole two weeks of training. Being a 4 year college grad should also give you the ability to look at this career with a different (more positive?) perspective than most other new drivers. Hopefully you don't burn out too quick or get disenchanted as many do. If your goal is to stay in this profession, aim high and keep your record clean. There are plenty of $80-100K jobs available for the good drivers, of which there are surprisingly few. Some will snort at that last statement but it is true. Good luck driver!

Yes I'm super happy I went the community college route. It was expensive $4250, but I was able to get a small loan at 0% interest to pay for it, but the instructor was really top notch and after what he put us through the CDL driving test course was very easy, and I have the option to go back and get some refresher seat time before company driving tests for free. Also just to clarify and sorry if I gave the wrong impression, but I didn't graduate from college I went and couldn't decide on a major to stick to. I tried nursing, business, economics, pharmacy, accounting, and nothing seemed like something I'd like to do for a long time and all my friends that graduated either couldn't find jobs, didn't get jobs in the field of their degrees, or were working tons of hours for low salaries and were always unhappy with their work and bosses always looking over their shoulders. I might still go back to finish 1 or 2 degrees that i started cuz i'm pretty close on a couple of them, but honestly I don't want a corporate job or anything like that I really want to own a small car dealership and car repair shop some day where I can just work for myself. I'm looking to hopefully make good money in the oil fields or other sectors of the trucking industry. I don't mind working hard or long hours as I still consider myself to be fairly young and I want to make as much as I can while I can.

Just to throw the question out there, are there any oil field jobs hiring new drivers?

Happy to see you transform from a TTR lurker to a poster. I don't fault you for switching majors several times,, most times the hardest part about picking a career is not knowing if you'll actually like that career... until you've done it and you're knee deep in it.

Now that you have your CDL, just make sure to select the best type of hauling & company that suits you asap, within the next couple months, max. Most will require a refresher course if your new CDL is "stagnant" any longer than 3 months.
    Good luck!
