In the mid 1980s when Matlack had the contract for hot metal from Benton Harbor to Kokomo, we made that an eight-hour road test/student trip. Applicants were paid the set rate for the trip, and I was paid only $10 more as instructor/passenger. Very few applicants failed the driving test, but more decided they wanted nothing to do with molten aluminum.

Just the opposite a really short one.
Me an a buddy of mine decided to run team for a minute. We applied at KENNEDY SIMONS they were in al. We Reno. Truck was bobtailed to us in Reno
Orientation was in the truck ,road test was taking the driver to greyhound 5miles
    Didn't take 45mins for both.
While I was typing I remembered a shorter experience. This back in 91. This guy gives me a call, we just left a company a couple days earlier( fired) meet me at bla bla bla
I found a job. We filled out apps manger throughs me set of keys an says it's that one over there it's loaded for Canada call when you're my. I didn't know at the time but I wasn't even allowed in Canada. Made in an out though never been back.

The construction company hired for a side dump driver was the same way. They got three hours of free labor out of me.I picked up one inch rock and took it back to the employers location dumped load and went back two more times. So it averaged three hrs or more.Considering what they pay their drivers across the board with no raises i wasn't surprised.

First company was Decker (PAM) at the old Jersey terminal. It was about 5 miles.
Second company was "here's the key" .

    Molten? KEWL!!!

From the Alumimum Plant we had in western maryland about as the crow flew yonder from Sharpsburg by the river potomac, we had pots in plant property with molten aluminum. They had absolute right of way over everything. even God had to stand aside to let them roll by undisturbed.

The dry van loading dock was finally fenced in after one too many drivers got mashed into tomato stew under the wheels of the billets on the forklift flying into the back of the trailer. Too many people have gone in there and gotten hurt really bad or killed after they were told not to do it specifically there.

My first road test was when I went to work for Days Express in 1986 and there were 3 of us that climbed in with the safety guy, we each drove about 5 miles. One guy couldn't downshift so he was sent home. That was my shortest test my longest was when I went to work for Hiner Transport I think it was about 15 miles or so.
