In the mid 1980s when Matlack had the contract for hot metal from Benton Harbor to Kokomo, we made that an eight-hour road test/student trip. Applicants were paid the set rate for the trip, and I was paid only $10 more as instructor/passenger. Very few applicants failed the driving test, but more decided they wanted nothing to do with molten aluminum.

From the Alumimum Plant we had in western maryland about as the crow flew yonder from Sharpsburg by the river potomac, we had pots in plant property with molten aluminum. They had absolute right of way over everything. even God had to stand aside to let them roll by undisturbed.
The dry van loading dock was finally fenced in after one too many drivers got mashed into tomato stew under the wheels of the billets on the forklift flying into the back of the trailer. Too many people have gone in there and gotten hurt really bad or killed after they were told not to do it specifically there. -
My first road test was when I went to work for Days Express in 1986 and there were 3 of us that climbed in with the safety guy, we each drove about 5 miles. One guy couldn't downshift so he was sent home. That was my shortest test my longest was when I went to work for Hiner Transport I think it was about 15 miles or so.
