Longtime businessman Deets Faces Bankruptcies of North East Trucking Company

Facing the seizure of trailers vital to its business, a long-established Mountaintop trucking company is seeking bankruptcy protection stemming from a dispute over the lease of the vehicles.
North East Transfer Inc., which incorporated in 1969, filed last week for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection following litigation initiated in April by a Chester County truck dealer over lapsed payments on the lease of 50 truck trailers.
Luzerne County Judge William Amesbury issued an opinion July 12 ordering North East to pay $206,017 or lose the vehicles. The seizure of the trailers was approved four days later.
The trailer battle represents the latest test for Ed Deets, 81, president of North East Transfer, who filed for personal bankruptcy protection last December with his wife, Elizabeth.
"My whole life has sort have been a struggle," said Mr. Deets, who started driving trucks in 1947.
