    I run produce from Salinas to them there frozen parts up north, Good luck with that, Carlile isn't going to hire you they think more of there trucks than that.

    He was also likely suffering from schizophrenia and may well have been suicidal.
    Krakauer does not give that angle enough investigation.
    I think he was pushing it a bit further each excursion in hopes that he would die.

    You don't get much more cautionary than Jack London's short story "To Build A Fire." Though I understand Krakauer is more modern and easier to relate too. London's fictional short stories are written from his own experience hiking through the Yukon.
