My truck driving school was about 5 weeks long.I never drove a truck before school. Ever. I have spent maybe 160 hours in the driver's seat. I drove in the yard learning my DMV test skills, the congested streets in Oakland and a few miles on Nimitz/880 freeway. I passed and got my 1st ever CDL license in June, 2010.
This probably belongs in a blog or something. Oh well. here it is:

I am now looking at starting with USXpress. Ideally, I want to stay home and work in the Bay Area and come home every night but having no luck making that happen. My friends here at home want me to stay here too, but they do not have to worry about my bills. Looks like I will have to go OTR, so I have made a list of my bills for the Mrs. who will handle my finances for me while I am mostly gone for one year.

My orientation will be in Dallas, TX, according to the female voice I have been talking to in Tennessee. I hope this works out. If I start the orientation with them like I am strongly considering at the moment, I am looking forward to a long bus ride.

Good luck to you basstime. I've noticed that local jobs are very rare and if available, they go to those with lots of experience. Gotta pay your dues my friend.
Good luck at USxpress. I talked to a lease operator a few months ago and he was pretty pleased with his situation. Had a nice truck and you could tell he was proud of it too.
Learn all you can and don't let any bumps in the road get you down. No situation is perfect and you've got to make the best of everything you can. ...and those that may come by here and post something like "good luck they suck" kind of stuff, don't let them get to ya. You did your research, made an educated decision. You'll be fine.
Good luck to you and see you out on the road!

    Thanks Gears.

I think you might be right with regard to finding a local gig, or rather in my case not finding one. That is exactly why I am looking at possibly going OTR. Still, a few times I have succeeded at what seems nearly impossible. Though it seems like finding a local driving job without experience fits the description of being nearly impossible, my personal history says it can be done. What I especially do not want to do is feel defeated if my quest to stay in the San Francisco area proves to not be possible at this time.

It was good to read your reply.

Don't feel defeated if you don't find a local gig. You're doing what you can do to find one, and if not, OTR is available and ready to provide the experience you need and $$ to pay the bills. Get some wheel time and put some feelers out after awhile.
OTR isn't that bad....really. Maybe a regional gig will be available.
    You'll be fine!

I would try fly to Dallas if I were you, that is one L O M G ride on the graydog... Check out Southwest, I but it is cheaper than the dog. Thank ask the gal about just getting the dog ticket switched to Southwest.

Good Luck and God Speed to ya!

Just last night I had the idea you speak of. I was looking at the Southwest site and discovered the cost to fly is really not much more than the cost of riding the bus if I book online. It's not cheaper, but I have spent more for lunch than the difference in price. I never considered asking about having it switched on their dime. They might have a contract with Greyhound and might not be able to accommodate me even if they wanted to, but I will never know unless I ask. That is a great idea and I will certainly call to see if it is possible.

When I looked at the Greyhound site I discovered they have WiFi onboard, so I thought I would bring a laptop and make the best of it. But man, 36 hours! That is one long bus ride!

Thanks for idea, I will ask.

    All the best to you!

A lot of companies will reimburse you the cost of a bus ticket if you decide to fly. You pay the difference if there is one. Call and ask them.

    basstime54 and pagan22 Thank this.

Absolutely I will. No doubt the company's cost to get me there by bus is less than what it would cost me if they have a contract with them, but it is sounds like I might get some amount of reimbursement.

YES, if I have the receipt, USXpress said they will reimburse the difference in cost if I choose to use a jet rather than a bus. This newly discovered fact makes this a very good day on my end!
