Hi bowhunter, why, on God's sweet earth, if you have operator experience, would you even consider a truck driving job, unless I'm missing something here. Operators can make twice as much as a driver, and you are GUARANTEED weekends off. Please reconsider this whole deal. You will regret it, I promise.

I work 7 days a week 18 hours a day and have for 10 plus years. One of our lowboy driver got sick so I helped out with the driving and loved it. I'm burnt out on machinery operating. And want my family time as well as to be able to see new places. I'm just ready for a change plain and simple in 10 years I might have had 20 days off not including holidays needless to say that hard on relationships. At least in a truck I can bring the old lady with me.

Well, maybe look for a better operators job. I have a friend in the twin cities, that is a dozer operator, and yes he does work long hours, but goes home at the end of the day, and get's unemployment in the winter, and has a cool classic car collection. You do what you want. 9-5, 5 day a week trucking jobs are almost non-existent, and 7 days a week, could be the norm. ( you may get a day off during the week). After 35 years in a truck, I'd almost kill for an operators job. Personally, I don't recommend it.

It's a great job as I have already said and it's family owned by a good friend of mine and his dad. But like I stated I'm burnt out. I want a change of scenery and if I don't end up liking it I always have a job to go back to.

Well, I'm not sure how old you are, but getting "burnt out" is part of working. While trucking is a way of seeing different scenery, rest assured, you WILL get burnt out on driving. Many times, it's on the same stretch of road, over and over. And load weight will vary, even if it's the same stuff (like dump truck) and that is a pain. Looking back, if I had to do it again, I'd definitely do the operator gig. After 35 years, I am "burnt out" on trucking. ( actually, was burnt out way before the 35th year) and won't truck again, unless I absolutely have to. Really, think this through. It's not near as glamorous as it seems.
