Never thought about getting rid of them, other than flying lessons through the wood. lol
Will waste some more money getting them fixed, when they work they do sound good!
Had a old RK56 I bought years ago (gave it to a friend). Now that one you could not tear up. I once cracked a windshield with it in my younger, more hot tempered days.

Maybe the old rk 56s were better but the newer versions are not. Good luck finding the older version in new condition.

Astatic is not without problems either though. I had one that the return spring for the key broke in it. Mic stayed keyed up and would not release. Took it home, cut a pen spring down and it is good as new.

I had another that the cord shorted out in. Bought a new one from Sparky for about 30 bucks. BUt then it was about 10 so years old. I got it used at a cb shop in Ann Arbor Michigan.

I can't say if I heard an older RK56 or not. Non of our drivers have RK56s and I don't chat with other drivers (out of our company) about their mics unless their transmit sounds like crap, but then it is usually due to them running a cheap powered mic.

I usually carry a couple new spare 636 mics with me in the truck. I sell them to guys in our company for the same that I pay for them from Sparky.

I do have a friend that has a nice sounding newer rk 56 but then a CB shop had done some type of cap mod to it or something. So it is not stock out of the box. Don't ask me about this mod because I know nothing about it. He just said that they opend up the mic and soldered something in it to make it sound better.

I keep hearing that there is a cheap mic out there that has the same internals as the RK56 for close to half the money though. I forget what brand and model it is though. I do knwo that the skythumper sk65 is pretty close for less money.

But everyone has their own opinions on what mic sounds the best ont he receiving end. I like the sound of the 636s simply because I can better recognize the voice on my end. We do have one driver in our company that is still running an RK56 5 pin mic. He doesn't sound any were near what he sounds like when you are talking to him face to face. At first I had to keep asking who it was until I got used to it.

So what I am saying is the RK56 seems to change the natural sound of a persons voice. Meaning they don't sound the same as when you are talkign to them face to face. I am nto saying that they are not a clear sounding mic and if you don't know the other driver personally and don't talk to them face to face then it might not matter anyway.

99% of my comunications is with the other 70 drivers in our fleet. It is nice to beable to easily recognize the other drivers when they shout out to you.

Oh and how the hell did you get off my ignore list????

Have to agree on the New Road King 56's...They are for the most part "Junk".

The old Turrner RK 56's were well built, but Barjan took a good thing and for the most part, just ruined it cutting corners to make a extra buck.

The Ranger SRA 198 Noise Canceling Mic is built much better, and even cuts the noise better. I haven't seen many CB Shops that sell the SRA 198, but if you "Google" "Ranger SRA 198 Mic" you should have no problems finding them on-line...(avg. price is around $39+ S&H)

Another good Mic for the Cobra is the RF Limited 2018. This is a combo Noise canceling Mic, Echo Mic, Power Mic, all in one!

The RF 2018 is what I been running on my Cobra 29 LX LE now for the last 4 or 5 months and get nothing but good reports with it.

JJD, Do the Barjan built 56's still say turner telex on the back or do they actually say Barjan ? Is there a way to tell the difference with a quick look?

    Thanks

its Barjunk now . . . . they say Road King/Telex which,I guess gets them around
the bush on riding the trademark from Turner* ?
I have an SRA and it does a good job, dont quite like the feel
but the audio is real good.

I like my Skythumper mic. However I have had people tell me the coffin style mics were good too.

Yeah, they don't say "Barjan" anywhere on the Mic. They may say Telex tho. There is a local CB Shop here in Dallas that sells some in box's that actually say Turner, but I think they are just copys of the RK 56... There not Turner, because Turner has been out of business for quiet some time now...I'm pretty sure there like the fake Nike shoes that come out of China...

Unless someone is selling a "NOS" Turner 56 on eBay, you won't find them for sale in stores...
