End of March/beginning of April, I'm going to start looking for a used reefer. This is my first time buying a reefer, so I'm open to suggestions on what to look for and look at when checking them out.
Requirements are 50' up to 53'x102" (probably go with a 53'), air ride, Thermo King unit (may consider Carrier if the trailer is priced right), relatively clean, no damage on the rails and no patches. This may sound strange, but no smooth sided trailers - needs to have corrugated exterior skins. 1998 or newer.
Preferences are Great Dane, followed by Utility, then other. Would like a reefer unit with 15,000 hours or less on it.
Reefer does not have to be CARB compliant...CA can suck it.
Looking to spend in the vicinity of $10,000.
Appreciate PMs with any leads/information.
Thanks.
Looking for a reefer...

if I had my way I'd be looking for about an 02 + great dane 50 foot spread axle. with thermo king.
I'm not to fond of my carrier unit. it cools good but the thing has a mind of it's own running high speed then low then it will hit high speed for about 3 seconds and back to low. #### thing drives me nuts. It was worse before I tightened the belts. it's also terribly loud -
Pop the arm off the high speed solinoid, it will run and cool just fine on low speed. Or just unplug it, whichever is easier.
Ditto the 50 ft reefer comments bty. Dane or utility. -
I don't know how reasonable your "no patches" requirement is if you're referring to the inside. There's plenty of good trailers out there, in your price range that have had damage or patches to the floor etc. If repaired correctly, there's not much to worry about. I don't know if you can find a trailer that age without some sort of repair that's been done on it.
I had a Wabash but to me it's obvious the Dane is better made and of better quality. Thermo-King is better than Carrier in my opinion. You'll swing a home-run if it's a Whisper Unit too. -
Wabash is heavy as a tank
My 2000 has no patches in the floor. floor damage is the begining of the end for reefers. once there is a crack for moisture to get through it's a slow downhill slide. And 99% of floor patches I see are not "correctly" done. To be correctly done in my opinion the plate needs to be cut at every floor rib and pounded down into the notch and then fully welded so no water can get through. -
Gears, my 'no patches' requirement is for the exterior skin, the interior walls below the lower 18" line or so, and the floor. I'm with MM when it comes to floor patches. Of course, if someone replaced an exterior skin panel it might be hard for me to tell, but that's the chance you take buying used. Just have to hope if that's the case, they did it right and the insulation was done correctly at the same time. I am leaning towards a 50' spread, but beggars can't be choosers. The more I talk to folks about Carrier, the less impressed I am. The search continues...I'm hoping to hit a home run in the next two or three months. We'll see. I certainly appreciate the comments gents.

Panel replacement is never hard to tell unless they painted the entire trailer side. The panels NEVER match.

Like I said, I do have time on my side...and I'm not going to settle for something, only to have to dump a crapload of money into the thing later on. If I don't have the trailer by my self imposed time line, the company I'm most likely leasing on with has plenty of trailers I can yank behind me. I'd just rather keep the percentage held back for using their trailer to myself, thank you very much. -
$10k don't buy you a whole lot of reefer.... wait, that don't sound good... lol
the one thing that will help you is you can get a non carb compliant unit and there is a bunch on the market -
Medicine Man, to you what is an exceptable amount of hours on a used reefer? I know a lot depends on how well the stuff was taken care of but on average, what is a number you would not want to cross when looking at hours on a used unit?
