Hey everyone, I’m looking at buying my first truck to pull dry van and reefer. Some 30k lb loads sometimes 45k. Just a variety. I’m considering leasing on with landstar. I’m wondering if any experienced owner ops could give me some advice on what truck specs should I be looking at to run primarily east coast. I live in ga and plan on running around the upper Midwest up through Chicago area, Ohio Pa, the Carolinas southeast etc.. I’m looking at a 579 Pete or t680 kw with a Cummins. Not looking for crazy horsepower or the highest fuel efficiency. Just want a happy balance between power and efficiency. Something that’ll get me decent mpg numbers and also get me through the mountains without feeling like a dog up every hill. What hp/torque ratings should I be looking at? and what number of gears (10,13,18?) should I be looking at? I prefer manual over automatic.
Appreciate any advice thanks.

500+ hp and a 13 speed will be just fine.
I'd go with Detroit. Or maybe cat.KDHCryo, cthomas341 and 201 Thank this. -
You could go with a 350.
I’ve ran 275,350,430,500,525,565, and 600.
Modern trucks you’d be happy 430-500.
Anything lower is perfectly fine, if you have lots of time to get there.
Anything higher is a lot of fun, if you have an unlimited budget to buy fuel.
In the current market environment expenses will make you or break you. So I’d recommend something in the lower 400’s.
Look up Joe Morrow he has some wild spec’d Volvos and regularly breaks 10 mpg.Another Canadian driver and cthomas341 Thank this. -
Nothing under 500 hp, and a good old fashioned OD 10 speed, 3:55 gears,
and go with the KWhopper, ANY KWhopper. Loved my Petes and my WS, but to do it again, KW all the way.
Another Canadian driver, cthomas341 and Vampire Thank this.
