At one time that information was valuable, after hearing how bad he took a friend of mine on a rebuild I wouldn’t let him work on a lawn mower.

pushbroom, SAR, swaan and 2 others Thank this.

@SmokinCAT do you have any suggestions for gifted mechanical CAT mechanics? I have been reading through forums like this one and TDG and have had trouble figuring out what direction to take my 3406c in. I understand that building a motor is as much an art as a science, however the conflicting opinions are starting to confuse me. I was originally just planning on throwing a 7fb pump and advance on my 3zj however some reading I’ve done suggests otherwise. You seem to be one of the last active gurus on any of these forums and very knowledgeable at that and would much appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!

If you do go with a 7fb pump and advance, you need to change nozzles as well. Becareful trying to push 3zj nozzles on an older pump, it will wear the plungers and barrels out fast on a single scroll pump.

Will the hot timing of the old style pump burn holes in my pistons? I’ve read the lower pop off pressure is less than advantageous for big power any truth to that? Thank you for reply!

Just a clarification when I said “suggestions for gifted mechanical CAT mechanics” I wasn’t referring to myself, I meant shops I could call to perhaps pick someone’s brain and buy parts from. I tried talking to Pittsburgh Power, and the guy told me his CAT guy died and he sold his mechanical pump equipment.

You have to run nozzles, pump, advance and pistons that all match if it’s a daily driver. Maybe just keep all the 3zj stuff on the engine and search for some shops that will sell you a +10% nozzle that matches the 3zj components

    AArtemtrk Thanks this.
